Intune Lost Device

Hi Guys

i am very new to this so hope i can clarify something
my business is looking at intune for device management, from a security perspective, if a device was lost or stolen i had read that a format command can be sent and an ability to locate the device

if the device was lost/stolen and the person wiped the hard drive and reinstalled windows with their own version, would intune still find the device using a device ID link or hardware ID ?, or it it fair to say it would be long gone

Thanks

@MichaelLewis-7595 Thanks for posting in our Q&A.

For this issue, when we wipe a device, it restores a device to its factory default settings and this device will not be managed by intune. So, we can't see this device in intune portal and can't find the device information, such as device ID or hardware.

Hope it will help.

When you wipe a device, but don't delete the device ID from Autopilot devices, and the user tries to install new OS manually, he will end up to the organization sign-in screen if he has network access established at the OOBE state. This creates a funny chaos to the theft and no harm for you.

hi, i am unsure if my question has been answered properly in that my scenario may have been unclear. ill give one and see what the outcome is.

so lets say we have a device registered and assigned to my organisation in intune....the device gets stolen and the person who steals it does not connect it to the internet, wipes the hdd and reloads windows on it.

once windows is loaded up or through the load process can the machine still be viewed in my organisations intune console, or can i view the devices location

does intune track via hardware registration or simply device registration via the device name

hope that helps

Yes, it will be gone. If OS is wiped, you will loose the membership between computer account and your tenant.
