sql server 2016 replication license requirement

Hi Folk,

To setup replication (maybe snapshot/transnational/merge/peer to peer), does Publisher server, subscriber server, and distribution server all need to be licensed.

Thanks
Chirag

All active SQL Server must be licensed.

Suppose subscriber server is non-production. Does it still require a license?

See the contact details in Olaf's post. There is not anyone here who can answer that question with confidence.

My gut feeling, though, is that you will have difficulties to convince license auditor that a subscriber from a production environment is not also a production environment. But I've been wrong before.

Hi @ErlandSommarskog

Thanks for your input. You have not answered my question straight forward but I feel that I am not the only one who is fed up with Microsoft licensing. I thank you again for your effort.

Chirag

Hi @ChiragSachdeva-6150,

Agree with others.
If you are using SQL Server Express edition as subscriber, you don’t need a license for subscriber. If not, then if it contains production data, it is a production server and requires a license.
Please contact a Microsoft licensing specialist as olaf mentioned for detailed information about the license issue. For international customers, please use the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/worldwide to find contact information in your locations. For Volume Licensing Service Support, please use the https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/contact-us to contact information for your country.

Best Regards,
Amelia
