MAC RDP "Please Wait" after Windows RDP

My main Windows machine is a Dell 8930 running Windows 10 Pro 20H2 + updates. I have two laptops - an HP Laptop running Windows 10 Pro 20H2 which I keep in the family room and a Macbook Air running Big Sur 14.3 which tends to stay in the kitchen area - and is also the one I tend to take while travelling (smaller - lighter). More often than not, I am doing RDP from the Macbook. It generally works just fine. But if I do RDP from the HP (which will also work just fine) THEN attempt to run RDP from the Macbook, after the messages that RDP is configuring the Windows host, I get a blue screen with "Please Wait". If I go back to the HP, it's hit or miss as to whether it works or not, but the Macbook RDP client fails for any new attempts to connect from that point on with the blue screen and "Please Wait".

I am using the standard Windows RDP client on the HP , and the Microsoft RDP client 10.6.5 on the Macbook running Big Sur 14.3.

As an IT Support professional I come across many issues, and this one landed on my desk on Monday 17th June 2022.

User has a brand new MacBook, and everytime he RDPs to his main office PC he gets "please wait" for a very long time and it never actually logs in.

Tested multiple Mac based RDP clients, same issue.
Tested from a Windows PC and it worked.
Restarted his office PC and he was then able to RDP from MacBook.

Solution:

  • Logged him out of his Office PC

  • Backed up his Windows domain profile with Transwiz (https://www.forensit.com/move-computer.html)

  • Deleted his domain profile from My Computer > Properties > System Properties > Advanced > User Profiles > Settings

  • Then I ran SFC/scannow to fix any Windows corruptions

  • Re-run Transwiz in order to restore his profile as it was before.

I asked him to re-test later that day from home and he said both his MacBook and PC logged straight in with no Please wait error.

This is an ideal solution for me as I did not have to rebuild his PC, therefore I would put this down to local profile registry corruption as the users actual profile data was ok since we restored it back.

I hope this can help other Mac users resolve this issue for them aswell.

Kind Regards

Alexander

Hi,

  1. Please try to log on directly (console mode login, not RDP connection) to the Dell computer when the problem occurs. Then open the task manager, click users and expand the user information to view the session resource usage of the RDP session / user initiated by HP at this time. Note that when "please wait" is displayed on the Mac, whether the session / user initiated by the MAC is displayed in the users expanded information list of the task manager of the remote computer (indeed Dell). If it is displayed, it is recommended that you manually disconnect HP's session / user, and then check whether MAC RDP has successfully established the connection.

  2. It is recommended that you first use the same user credentials to publish RDP connection from HP and MAC. After completing the above operation, publish RDP connection with different users credentials from HP and MAC to see if there are similar problems.

  3. Additionally you could also view the event log on the remote computer, if it gets a corresponding error logs on the basis of problem occurred time. An useful event log will also be helpful to troubleshooting.
