SMSS Upggrade Fails to Login with 'Bad Request' Error Message.

Dear SSMS,

SQL Server Management Studio 15.0.18384.0
SQL Server Management Objects (SMO) 16.100.46367.54
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 15.0.19535.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 10.0.19041.1
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 6.0
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.30319.42000
Operating System 10.0.19042

It is a side-by-side installation but how do I revert back to my original?

Regards

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

Your message is somewhat terse. What did you upgrade from and want to revert to? You say side-by-side, does this mean that you have SSMS 17 as well? You can run SSMS 17 together with SSMS 18.

Maybe you could post a screenshot of the error message, so that we understand the context where it appears?

Hi @GRAHAMTATLOCK-9547,

SMSS Upggrade Fails to Login with'Bad Request' Error Message.

It seems that you encountered a connection failure problem at that time, because you suspected that the problem was caused by upgrading SSMS, so you asked how to restore SSMS to the version before the upgrade in hopes of solving the connection problem. I am glad to learn from your subsequent reply that the problem has been resolved, and you explained "Other changes were made at our company that was the problem", not the reason for upgrading SSMS.

What is meant by side-by-side in the MS documentation?

You can install and use multiple versions of SSMS, SSMS 16.x, SSMS 17.x (or earlier versions) and SSMS 18.x side by side on a computer.
But there cannot be multiple SSMS 18.x versions (such as 18.6 And 18.9.1), when SSMS18.9.1 is installed, the previous SSMS18.x version will be upgraded/replaced.

We are still in development and yes, it was necessary to uninstall 18.6 before installing 18.9.1.

Usually when installing the newer SSMS 18.x version, there is no need to uninstall the earlier SSMS 18.x version.

But if you have a preview version of SSMS 18.x installed, you must uninstall it before installing SSMS 18.9.1.

Check the details in this document.

It was panic stations but now it has just been resolved.

Other changes were made at our company that was the problem.

It reads as if it can be switched. The SSMS was updated from 18.6.x to the current 18.9.1.

I don't think you can run 18.6 and 18.91 on the same machine. Although can always specify an installation folder. I have never had the guts to test what happens if I specify an alternative when I do an upgrade.

On the other hand, you can run major versions of SSMS side-by-side. On this machine, I have SSMS 2005, SSMS 2008, SSMS 2012, SSMS 2014, SSMS 16, SSMS 17 and SSMS 18.

I'm glad to hear that you issue has been resolved.

Thanks for the information Erland.

We are still in development and yes, it was necessary to uninstall 18.6 before installing 18.9.1.

It is working fine now.

Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to provide a better understanding of SSMS Criszhan. Indeed there was a connection issue that rendered users not able to login.
