Certain Windows PCs can no longer RDP to 2012 R2 server

Have a terminal server accessed by users in various remote offices. Nearly all connect via RDP over VPNs connecting the various routers.

This has been the setup for years. Recently I have a few - and only a few PCs - that can no longer connect to the RDP. They can ping the servers but refuse to connect. I have created a few holes in the central router and they can RDP via the EXTERNAL IP but I obviously do not want to keep this as a permanent solution.

The PCs in question are both Windows 7 and 10. Is there a particular update or setting on the PC end I should be looking for?

Alternately, would a server update have created such a situation? I know I am being a little vague here but I have tweaked RDS settings and security to no avail and am open to any ideas.

Hello @JohnWallenfeldt-1078

"Cannot to remote desktop" is a common error, the cause of it may vary differently.

You could narrow down the issue by fixes provided in this article: https://techgenix.com/remote-desktop-cant-connect-to-the-remote-computer/ first.

Best Regards
Karlie

Thank you. I kind of meant to start off as an open question. I went through that list. I do admit it may be an update. But, if so, are there any in particular I should be looking for? I do not see any daylight between these PCs and others in the same offices that can connect.

These particular PCs used to be able to connect to this server and now cannot, but only using the local IP. They can do so through the external address and port, which is normally disabled.

I have tried looking for any relevant errors in the event viewer logs but nothing stands out that I could point anyone to. Is there another log location I should be checking?

Thanks again for giving me a checklist to start with.

Hi John,
feels like it is more of the issue with network setting ?
have you tried any network analyzer ?
