Which one is better basic disk or dynamic disk?

Hi,

There are various links explaining about basic disk and dynamic disk.

If I am right, volume created at the time of Windows installation is basic disk and volume created after Windows installation is dynamic disk.

Because of disk health, faster response and data safety; one of techies recommend for basic disk.

Moreover, basic disk is created at the time of Windows installation, can it be created after Windows installation?

Please elaborate for this.

Hello,

Dynamic disks have been deprecated in Windows and Microsoft no longer recommends using them.

Read more here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/change-a-dynamic-disk-back-to-a-basic-disk

Hope this answers your query!

@KapilArya thank you for replying.

I gone through the link.

Previously I created some volumes like E: G: etc. from Disk Management after installation of Windows 10.

Recently I reinstalled Windows 10 and I have seen all volumes E: G: at the time of installation and deleted all volumes.

With all volumes (E: G:) Dynamic Disk was written and one techie advised, create all required volumes at the time of Windows installation only i.e. Basic Disk and avoid Dynamic Disk i.e. creating volumes after Windows installation.

That's why I got confused.

Please elaborate.

I admit I am not familiar with Dynamic Disks but they seem complicated. See Basic and Dynamic Disks. For something simpler to read see Difference between Basic Disk and Dynamic Disk - GeeksforGeeks. You say better but what is best for someone else might be worst for you. Note that a Basic Disk can be converted to a Dynamic Disk (at least that was true when Dynamic Disks were supported) so their creation is not limited to Windows installation. And the conversion requires (required) deleting everything from the Dynamic Disk.

Basic is just that - a basic disk, you can remove and add it as will.
Dynamic disk is an enhanced partition table in Windows that enables enhanced features such as software raid.
Also, every time you want to use it on a new computer, or even if you just remove and put it in, you will have to manually import the disk.
Personally, unless this is very good software or it has very big benefits, I would leave it is a basic disk - I deal with many removable disks and I use basic on all of them.

Microsoft tends to shift from a basic disk setup to its dynamic setup when you create more than four partitions on an MBR disk. This is helpful for a Windows-only system. But, if you want to dual-boot with something else, you're likely to have problems accessing the Windows filesystems, or even installing your new OS.
