Logic Apps vs Data Factory for orchestration

We have data pipelines that run in SSIS today and we are planning to build new ones in ADF. One of the challenges we have with the current implementation is that we do everything within the SSIS package and our SQL licensing costs are extreme.

By everything I mean we go fetch data via SFTP, we copy files around, we compress and encrypt data, etc. This requires us to have very big SQL servers and expensive licenses.

I am afraid we'll duplicate the problem is ADF. Is it best suited to do all of this or should we use Logic Apps or some other job orchestration to do the tasks that don't actually transform the data?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @EricInIT-1,

Azure Data Factory allows you to interact with your data at scale by stitching together all your data stores together and build a data-centric platform inside your company ranging from copying data from one place to another, transforming data sets, loading data with bulk imports and much more. It is fully optimized for data processing and it ensures you don’t need to worry.

On the other hand, Azure Logic Apps is more focused on application integration where you can use it to unify all your internal & external services to create a unified infrastructure on which you can run your business processes and improve your company as a whole. The difference here is that it’s not focused on the data itself but more the integration and connectivity with all these systems and how they communicate.

They have their own advantages, you can use them selectively according to your own needs.
