Disk Burst definition

Hi, I am trying to understand how to make the "Disk burst ignore time" setting described here

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/customize/power-settings/disk-settings-disk-burst-ignore-time

work as I need it to. First, I need to understand how the "Disk Burst" of activity to be ignored is defined, and possibly how to set it, so that I don't waste time trying to use the wrong thing.

The information provided from Microsoft is far from exhaustive. I hope someone can help me here. Thanks :)

Hi @GaryNebbett , thank you for the document you provided. Even though it's quite old I think it is perfectly accurate even for Windows 10.

So, from what I understand, Disk Burst Ignore Time prevents the Disk Idle timer to be reset for disk activity ("Bursts" of activity) that lasts less than the specified Ignore Time, so that the sleep state of a drive is not postponed for arbitrarily inisgnificant activity, thus improving energy consumption.

It kind of makes sense, though I had always understood (and sincerely hoped) it as something that prevented unnecessary spin-ups rather than something that prevents unnecessary spin-down postponing; unfortunately, I was clearly wrong, so for my purposes it's completely useless, but I'm glad to have found help about it.

Thank you for your reply. That page tells definitely more than Microsoft but unfortunately it's not enough. In my case the disk is spun up for no apparent reason even if the Disk Burst Ingore Time is set to be longer, so I am interested in how is defined a Disk Burst that will be ignored and what won't get ignored even with this setting active.

I can provide at least some Sysinternals Process Monitor screenshots if it may help to understand what spins up my disk.

Hi,

I tried to find more information about the Disk Burst, but without luck.
I will do more research about it.
It will be appreciated if anyone who is familiar with this topic can share the experience.
