Stacking 2019 server on 2016 standard server host

We have an existing 2016 Standard Server with two 2016 VMs. We want to stack two 2019 VMs using a 2019 Standard Server License. Do the original 2016 CALs cover this or are 2019 CALs needed to be purchased also?

Should not be a problem to license and active the 2019 VMs in this manner. The 2019 instances will need 2019 user or device Cals though.

Thanks, that what I thought, the CALs were backwards compatible.. not forward.
