Exchange Server Connection

Question that I can't quite figure out

I have a customer who bought a server to host their email. Exchange 2016, fully patched and updated.

Their website/domain is hosted externally with an online hoster/designer, and the customer called and asked me to come in and get their Exchange connected and setup.

I can't quite figure out how to get it connected to the offsite hoster. They customer does not have their own Static IP address.

I have set the MX records in DNS, firewall is as open as I can make it - but the send/receive just doesn't work - at least not consistently. I have gotten a few emails to send out, but can't receive anything - internal or external.

Any thoughts? Suggestions of things to check?

Thanks

Randy

Hi,
1 Did you get any NDR when sending or receiving failed?
2 Test your Exchange domain in EXRCA with Inbound SMTP Email: https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/tests/InboundSMTP/input
3 I would first focus on messages can't be received internally, would you search the message tracking log about it and post the result with personal information covered?
4 I'm not really understanding about the online/offsite hoster you mentioned, is that a AV or Gateway?

The Message tracking log is full of entries like this:
STOREDRIVER RECEIVE 5/20/2021 11:48:35 AM
STOREDRIVER SUBMITDEFER 5/20/2021 11:48:35 AM
STOREDRIVER RECEIVE 5/20/2021 11:53:35 AM
STOREDRIVER SUBMITDEFER 5/20/2021 11:53:35 AM

Nothing else but those.

Inbound SMTP Fails
Outbound SMTP succeeds (but the messages don't send)
Outlook connectivity test fails.

By remote hoster I mean, their website and domain name is hosted by an outside company. The Exchange server is on the internal on-prem network (192.168.. IP)

Thank you for the test connectivity site - that provided some useful information.

”their website and domain name is hosted by an outside company“
Does it work like Godaddy?
There should be an Internet-facing IP, and that would NAT to your Exchange server internal Ip.
How did you set the other records?Post them like mail.domain.com rather than your real name.

MX Records don't exist or aren't correctly configured for your domain in Office 365. The MX value 'someemail.address' doesn't match one of the allowed values: mail.eo.outlook.com, mail.protection.outlook.com, mail.messaging.microsoft.com, invalid.outlook.com

I'm not entirely sure why it's saying that about the MX record ... I believe I have them setup correctly
