WSUS Updates not installing for some Computers

Good day

I have recently clean installed a WSUS Server with server 2019 OS, because my old WSUS didn't work properly and it also did not deploy the feature Updates for Windows 10.

The new server works great. I use GPO for WSUS Computer group assignment, which also works. In one group, I have about 150 clients. Most of them are the same model (HP Z420, HP Z2 and HP Probook g630).

Users are adivced to shut their computers down every evening, and almost all of them are following these instructions. Nevertheless, for alot of those computers, approved updates from WSUS do not install. They all have downloaded the updates, but they don't install. Some are still waiting to install the 20H2 feature update, and some of them already have this feature update installed, and are awaiting installation of some cumulative updates, or updates for Office or .NET framework.

The problem seems to be, that the affected computers do not install the updates at the GPO selected time. They wait with installation for the user to click "reboot and update". Since users are shutting down, and not rebooting, these updates never get installed.

There has to be a way to either force these computers to install updates at the selected time from the GPOm or to force the selection "shutdown and install updates" when users turn off their computers.

You can see my GPO settings below:

Hi, @SXS14-9526
Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.
You may try to set below group policy:
Do not adjust default option to Install Updates and Shut Down in Shut Down Windows dialog
If we set it "Disabled", specifies that Install Updates and Shut Down will be the default option in the Shut Down Windows dialog box if updates are available for installation at the time the user selects the Shut Down option to shut down the computer.

Hi Allen

Thanks for your answer.

I just checked this policy setting, and in my case the option "Do not display Install Updates and Shut Down option in Shut Down Windows dialog" was not configured.

I have changed it to "disabled" now, to see if the option now appears in the shutdown menu, but nothing changes. This Policy Setting does not seem to have any impact on my Windows 10 clients. No matter what I set this option to, there is no "shutdown and install updates" option in the shutdown dialogue.

Hi,
Another GPO setting "Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations" determines how long after the system boots up to start installing any missed updates. You can also set a delay time for the installation.
You may also combine the GPO "no auto restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installation".

I have configured that policy to 10 minutes.

Even though, Windows still does not show the "Shutdown and update" entry. It only shows "reboot and update", which does not really help, since users are told to shut down their PCs in the evening...

So even if the updates are downloaded AND installed, there is still a reboot needed, and shutting down does not have an effect...
