read only users seeing 'Status: Checked out to...' yellow notices

Users recently started complaining about seeing 'page is checked out to' messages at the top of SharePoint aspx pages. These pages are indeed checked out, but the users have Read access which iirc should NOT be showing that notification. This is a SharePoint 2016 on-prem farm.

  • Two different libraries on the same web application (different sites)

  • Both libraries have aspx pages that users access

  • Library A - Read Only users see the page which is checked out but without banner.

  • Library B - Read Only users see the page which is checked and see a yellow banner saying Status: Checked out to <checked out user>

  • Which browser is used does not change the results

  • Permissions on both libraries are exactly the same

A file being in a checked out state has no bearing on a user that only has Read access. I'm used to it not showing up. I may be having a brain fart, but I don't recall, can't find, and haven't been able to find on the interwebs, any setting that would have the presentation of that field show for a user on one page, but not the other.

Is this unheard of out there and or a bug? I was hoping to skip creating a ticket on this.

Hi @DavidCampbell-3768

Per my test these days, I didn't figure out why this message appeared. I suggest you to open a ticket with Microsoft for furthur help.

Me either. Seems like it would be some type of setting or possibly a corrupted library. I just haven't seen that expression in a library issue before. Thanks for looking.

Hi @DavidCampbell-3768

Could you please provide a screenshot of 'Status: Checked out to...' message?

Have you checked whether there are any files checked out or not?

You could follow below steps to check:

1.Library > Library settings > Manage files which have no checked in version.

2.If there are files have no checked in version, you can select files and take ownership of selection to check in.

Sure, I'll attach a screenshot... the same account is used to display both sides. The page being viewed is checked out by someone in both browsers in the screenshot.

Yes, the files are checked out. That is not at issue. We could check the documents in, no sweat. The issue is inconsistent display of the 'checked out by' notification which in my experience should not be showing up for users that only have Read access. I have been unable to identify any setting on the library or page that would start showing the checked out notice to Read users.
