Personal DevOps and Azure AD account can't merge

I created an Azure and DevOps account using a personal Microsoft account (anonymized@user ) to go through the Microsoft azure learning tutorials. Going from memory from several weeks ago, I'm not sure what exactly happened: I upgraded my Azure account to a free subscription to get the free services and initial credit to try my own services. Azure would not let me sign up unless I 'upgrade' to an organizational AD Account. I found an article about 'claiming' the domain, which I did since I own the domain. Now my Azure account is an AD "work" account. Now the problem is, I'm having trouble working with DevOps because it thinks it's a different account! To switch between DevOps and Azure, I have to sign out and sign in again. ![100279-image.png][1] I've read this article about merging my DevOps account https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/devops/organizations/accounts/connect-organization-to-azure-ad?view=azure-devops Now the problem is, the Connect Directory button is disabled. I've not been able to find a way to connect DevOps to the "Work" account. Both accounts have the same email, so I don't understand why it doesn't think I'm in an AD organization. Can anyone help? ![100431-image.png][2] [1]: /answers/storage/attachments/100279-image.png [2]: /answers/storage/attachments/100431-image.png

Hi anonymous user · Thank you for reaching out.

In the past, Microsoft allowed creation of Live ID (now called MSA) with corporate domain, which is no longer supported. Existing customers with their personal Microsoft Accounts created with their crop domains can have same email id as their work account after creation of Azure Account. Which is why you get a prompt to choose which account you want to use.

These accounts cannot be merged. To avoid this prompt, you will need to go to https://account.live.com/names/manage and rename your personal account to use @outlook.com domain, for example. After that, you can use microsoft.com@outlook.com as personal and anonymized@user as work account.

Note: This change is irreversible. Once renamed, you will no longer be able to use @jpcrowley.com for your personal account.

This did work in a round about way. Once I renamed the account, I was able to add it as a guest in AD and and connect the active directory. It took multiple days and tries, but it worked eventually.
