Deploying shared computers and re-purpose computers via Intune

Hi,

We have a customer who does not use an active directory environment and not using any O365 services. They have below requirements.

  1. Deploy shared computers which is used by multiple users. Users can use a single account (like a guest account) and when they log off, the data needs to be destroyed)

  2. Re-purpose computers by resetting the PCs. When re-purposed, the default applications should be automatically deployed so that the users can just login and use the computer. In this case, the users prefer to use local accounts.

My questions are, is the above requirements achievable with Intune and what type of licenses required for the tasks? Intune/Intune Device/O365/AAD?

Appreciate if anyone could help with this or point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Yes, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/configuration/shared-user-device-settings-windows.

  2. As long as the systems get enrolled in Intune (or another MDM), then yes. Using Autopilot makes this slightly easier as well although using local accounts makes no sense as there's no direct way to automate this (although I'm assuming a few details here). Self-deploying mode in Autopilot is possible.

Licensing for can be done using per-device licensing: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/mem/intune/device-licenses-introduction but if the intent here for #2 is to simply skirt licensing requirements, that's clearly not something you/they should be doing. Specifically, if there is a dedicated user for the device, regardless of how the user is logging in, that's a licensing and EULA violation.

Hi Jason,

I'm afraid I'm still not clear on the license requirement. Could you please help me to understand below.

So if we want to re-purpose a computer using in Intune
1. Let's say it's a shared computer, can we do it using per device license? And do we need Azure AD license for that?
2. If the re-purposed computer is going to be used by just one user, what is the license requirement?

Thanks.

I am not a licensing expert, you need to talk to your account team as my speculation on exact licensing requirements is just that, speculation.

To my knowledge, if there is no single user and the device is used in a kiosk type manner, then device licensing is sufficient. If there is a user assigned though, then you need to purchase per-user licensing.
