I have the same problem. I have two emails operating via Outlook. The gmail account will no longer allow a new folder to be set up. It also will not allow emails to be moved to folders under the other account, e.g., from the non-gmail to the gmail or vice versa - which I may wish to do to save them in a more appropriate folder.

any advice.

Work around is to set up the folder in Mac Mail. It will synch to OL365. Stupid MSFT but the workaround will work.

Did you ever figure this out? Because I just spend two days talking with support techs, and we have figured out how to solve it. Happy to share if you (or anyone) wants to know... :)

No, I've just been using the workaround. If you have information on how to add folders from Outlook 365 for Mac I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

Same issue here on my MacBook running macOS Big Sur 11.4 and Outlook 365 latest version 16.50. Funny thing is on my MAC Mini I am running the same OS and Outlook version and it works just fine.

I have 2 Gmail accounts on Outlook. One allows folders to be created, the other does not. This isn't normal behavior. Can' someone at MSFT be bothered to fix this?

Hi Leon, I have the same problem. I am not able to add any folder to my email account, the 'New Folder' under 'New items" is greyed out.
I use a MacBook Pro, with Office 365 (most updated version).

Hi @AnnMarieJones-3747,

What's the specific version of your Outlook for Mac(Outlook >About Outlook), and how did you configure your gmail account in Outlook(auto-configure a gmail account, configure it mannually with imap or others)?

Based on my tests with Outlook version 16.49(21050901), I could create new folder in my Gmail account normally like below:
102458-snipaste-2021-06-04-17-20-23.jpg
102459-snipaste-2021-06-04-17-10-18.jpg

So in order to avoid the version issue, please first ensure that you have updated to the latest version of Outlook.

Not yet. I need to get access to the laptop again to answer the above questions. However, given the mac is new and the upload from Microsoft was new, I'm assuming it is the latest version of Outlook. I didn't do a manual config, just logged in.

I'm using Outlook 16.51 and Catalina 10.15.7

I can add folders on the Microsoft 365 account but not on the Gmail account. A workaround is to use Mail on the Mac to add folders, which are then available in Outlook.

however, I can not move emails from the Inbox of one account into a folder of the other account. Hope that's clear.

Clearly, this is deliberate on the part of MS as it works if you have an Outlook email account, but not Gmail! They could have fixed it but chose not to. A workaround is to set up an Outlook.com email account, create desired folders in it and then mark them as Favorites in order that they appear at the top of Outlook. You can then drag emails from any account into them. So much for ease of use!

This function is wildly broken. I had to remove my profile and add it again because indexing broke and I couldn't search any of my emails - which is also the only workaround to fix that problem - only to find Outlook now has a wildly stripped down version of IMAP integration with Gmail.

Since Office has moved to a subscription model, I'm finding it harder and harder to justify using this suite of products when the dev team seems to be actively working against its user base. I oversee multiple projects at a time and need to be able to organize all materials and communications. The fact I can't make a simple folder makes Outlook pointless.

In case anybody else is in the same boat, here's the workaround I've sorted out:

1) Using the normal Outlook Gmail account add, input your info. That will be the Calendar Account
2) For IMAP email/folder support, go to this thread: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_outlook-mso_mac-mso_mac2016/outlook-for-mac-cannot-create-folders-in-gmail/da5be9cb-ffef-419a-9124-d9f5a96efd86?page=3
3) Follow the following steps, as per IdiotSandwich:

  1. In Outlook, look at the top bar. Click Outlook > Preferences...

  2. Select Accounts

  3. Click the + button on the bottom left

  4. Type in your Gmail/GSuite

  5. Next > Choose Not Google at the top right

  6. Make sure under Type it says IMAP

  7. Under incoming server: imap.gmail.com (will be filled out for @gmail, won't be for GSuite)

  8. Outgoing: smtp.gmail.com (will be filled out for @gmail, won't be for GSuite)

  9. Next and it'll bring you to a Gmail log in portal

  10. Log in to the account and it should ask you for some permissions

  11. Agree to the permissions and it should ask you if you want to open Outlook to finish up

4) In your accounts, make the IMAP account the default.

This is the proper solution for being able to add folders to an Outlook Gmail account on a Mac. Thank you!

Worked brilliantly, thank you. However for some reason my Outlook calendar now doesn't display - any ideas why that would be or how I can fix this?

Yes!! This is the right solution - just spent two days on the phones with tech support and we finally figured out this was the solution. Follow these steps and it will fix everything

Bless you! I have been using the technique discussed by SertacKeles-7015 directly below your answer (Create a label at gmail.com, Outlook will pick it up as a folder when it syncs.)

I found the ultimate solution for this issue as a workaround.

1- Login to your Gmail account through gmail.com.
2- Click on "Create New Label" (You should scroll down the folder/tag list on the left that begins by Inbox, Starred, Snoozed etc. Click "More". And then scroll down again to the very bottom)
3- You'll see a textbox with header "Please enter a new label name".
Type
Inbox/Name of the Folder You'd Like to Create (e.g.: Inbox/Read Later)
if you want to create a subfolder under your Inbox

Type
Sent/Name of the Folder You'd Like to Create
if you want to create a subfolder under your Sent folder.

You got the idea.

4- Go back to your Outlook for Mac. Right click on your Inbox or your account name and then click on "Synchronize Now".
If this doesn't work, go back to Gmail on your browser. Right click on an arbitrary e-mail, select "Label As" and pick your new label name.
And then try to Synchronize from your Outlook for Mac.

Sertac, you need to try the solution discussed in the answer just above yours by Adam Park. Works like a charm. I have been using the "create a label at gmail.com" for three years now. Finally solved.

The ANSWER to this issue which shouldn't really be an issue in 2022 is the following:

Log into your GMAIL account, Select See All Settings:

Click on the option at the top that says 'Labels'

Scroll to the bottom of the page to where it says 'Labels' Create new labels.

Think of the term 'Labels' as folders

Create new labels and click save and log out.

Open Outlook and resync your mailbox. You should now see new folders with the name you provided in Gmail.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

  1. Suggestion from @Martin-7960 above to work around this problem works fine, as a workaround, but is not as simple or easy to do.

  2. Suggestion from @AdamPark-3650 is also not so clear. I did not even tried that approach.

  3. I was using the method suggested by @JadeLiang-MSFT up to Office 2019. No deals here. But we are talking about the latest 2021 version. That DOES NOT work. Not in 2021 version. Care to update us on this?

  4. Recently I found that the suggestion from @SertacKeles-7015 was most adequate to go around this issue. But...

  5. Actually, I think the easiest solution is the one given by @JamesSeifert-4838 -->> "Work around is to set up the folder in Mac Mail. It will synch to OL365. Stupid MSFT but the workaround will work.".

Until Microsoft fixes this, it is by far the easiest way to go.
Of course, you will have to have all your accounts duplicated in both Outlook and Mac mail...
If you do not want to have dupes in your Mac, then you have to revert to solution indicated by @SertacKeles-7015

Although...I have another couple of IMAP accounts configured. Not Gmail, nor Hotmail. I am therefore limited by Outlook in this aspect and to me, the only REAL solution is to have all my accounts set up in MAC mail as well. I really hate lack of professionalism by Microsoft....

Ohh, another thing...the field receipts (a long claimed feature in Oulook for Mac), now appears greyed out. They decided to make it work only in O365, unless you have an Exchange account....
i believe this a poor decision call, but who am I?

Hope this helps, folks

In Outlook, click Outlook > Preferences...

Select Accounts

Select Gmail account or accounts that aren't working and remove by clicking the - down the bottom (if you haven't done this in a while you might want to back up your calendars and contacts)

Click the + button on the bottom left > New account...

Type in your Gmail > click Continue

Click on Not Google at the top right

Enter your Gmail password

Make sure under Type it says IMAP

Under incoming server: imap.gmail.com

Outgoing: smtp.gmail.com

Next and it'll bring you to a google account login portal

Log in to the account and it should ask you for some permissions

Agree to the permissions and it should open Outlook to finish up > add other email accounts or click done

Set that (or one of your) gmail as the default > Click on three little dots in a circle bottom right

Restart Outlook.

This works perfectly as long as your account is a GMAIL.

It fails on other IMAP accounts. Justo for info and thank you

My gmail is an IMAP account (why would your Gmail not be IMAP?) - and this setup works perfectly. Solution worked out with an outlook 365 helpdesk service person.
