Microsoft Edge | Sharepoint | "Open with Explorer" not available.

Hello,

We have been gradually moving all users from Microsoft Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge.

One of the users manages SharePoint content, and a feature that [still] works in I.E does not work in Microsoft Edge. This is the option to "Open with Explorer".

I.E prompts with:
102584-image.png
After selecting "Allow", the user can access Explorer.

When trying to do the same in Microsoft Edge, user receives:
102575-image.png

But cannot do anything further.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Rudy

I agree totally. Sync is not sufficient for this need. We have users who MUST NOT sync files as we do not want that information being held on a laptop. This applies with one drive as well. We want the files kept, securely, in sharepoint and to have the familiarity to the user of the file explorer interface.

Only Internet Explorer supports "Open with Explorer". The alternative suggestion is to use the OneDrive sync client. You can also use Add a network location from Windows Explorer and path appropriately to the site.

@trevorseward , Yes indeed IE supports OWE, although same can be enabled on edge browser as per the latest update from MS, but still clueless about the GPO setting on edge to make OWE work for SharePoint 2019 sites.

@RudolfAmarlapudi-2729,

Agree with trevor.

Quote from Microsoft:

Open with Explorer (in the classic SharePoint experience) and View in File Explorer (in the modern experience) are only available in Internet Explorer 11. These two options aren't available in other browsers such as Chrome and Microsoft Edge, and this situation won't change, because the underlying technology doesn't work in newer browsers.

Whether you're using Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, or another browser, Sync is a faster and more reliable method for putting SharePoint files into folders you can see in File Explorer.

Sync is flawed. Microsoft needs to fix the flaws in sync before completely abandoning Open in File Explorer. We are having some major issues with the sync feature. Files dropped in the linked folder in file explorer are not syncing up to SharePoint. I opened a ticket with Microsoft and ran some troubleshooting tips. I came in today to have emails from users that files were moved from synced document libraries to the recycle bin. It appears that in performing troubleshooting tasks identified by Microsoft support the deletion of the SharePoint document paths cache created by the sync tool in the user profile triggered the sync via the OneDrive client to delete the files from the SharePoint site and place them in the recycle bin. Now everything is a complete mess on the SharePoint site. Whoever made the decision that the sync tool is a replacement for the Open in File Explorer needs to work in the real world. DO not force a flawed client on users.

Thank you both for your responses. Very helpful.
I presume that using Microsoft Edge in I.E mode will also not work, correct?
Thanks in advance.

Go to More Tools In edge with the SharePoint page loaded.
Select Reload in Internet Explorer Mode
You will be able to select 'open with explorer'

Although the 'answers' to the original question do give the functionality, they do it through IE. Newer versions from Win10 and Win11 come with IE not even installed. So the 'open with IE' options are not even available in Edge until you go into the 'Turn Windows features on or off' section in the Windows OS and install IE. This is a major problem when business users use Windows Explorer all day every day to interface with their company Sharepoint system. As previously stated, the Sync feature has major flaws because it duplicates the cloud files onto the local machine causing disk space issues on SSD's as well as security issues by having files on laptops that should not be stored there. Not to mention the general sync functionality issues that are a known problem. Then there's file permissions which are a whole separate topic. The point is that the 'Open with Explorer' option requires IE still because of the way IE is integrated in the Windows OS under the surface. My guess is that Edge will never allow it because Edge is just a browser, not an integrated part of the OS like IE has been forever. It's unfortunate that Microsoft keeps doing this sort of thing to business users, but it seems right on par with their model.

My understanding is the View in File Explorer option is being rolled out to SharePoint tenants for use with Edge (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/sharepoint-view-in-edge). However, when I run the required configuration command (Set-SPOTenant -ViewInFileExplorerEnabled $true) I receive the following error:
Set-SPOTenant : The requested operation is part of an experimental feature that is not supported in the current environment.
Is this functionality being rolled out to tenants on a requested basis? How do I obtain this functionality as it is crucial to our company. Administrators need to access One Drive files for separated employees. We cannot sync to dozens of folders and do not want the files on our computers even if we could.
I made the change to Edge on my computer for testing. I now have the policy on my computer
145545-image.png

However, the View in File Explorer option still does not appear when browsing to a One Drive or SharePoint location in Edge. Does the option only appear after the ViewInFileExplorerEnabled variable has been set to $True? That brings me back to my original question. How do I make the option available in my tenant?

Any help/clarification will be appreciated. IE still works, but I'd prefer not to use it.

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone has clue about , how can I enable the open with explorer in Edge for Sharepoint 2019 sites, since the current GPO for open with explorer in edge supports only sharepoint online sites.
