Windows 10, 32 bit, Cumulative Updates Render Computer Useless

Twice, I have had cumulative updates for Windows 10 Home, 32 bit render it useless. The updates in question appear to be KB5001330 and KB5003173.

In both cases the Windows logo appears, then the system halts, disk activity ceasing, and as I recall the spinning wheel of dots never appearing. After three attempts at starting and subsequent forced shutdowns, the Windows 10 recovery screen displayed.

The first time, I had to use System Restore to restore the computer to the state prior to the update being installed. The second time Windows itself restored itself to the state prior to the update being installed.

Hey Microsoft, I'm fed up with your cumulative updates transforming my computer into an expensive doorstop! Don't assume that just because a cumulative update works on 64 bit systems, it will also work on a 32 bit systems. Test it before you release it! If you can't get it right the first time, then outsource it to someone who can.

So what is the status of your system?
Are you able to boot into the Windows or you are seeing the Recovery Environment?
Have you tried sfc and dism commands?

Status is working, but only because I spent countless hours researching on the Internet (that I ought to bill Microsoft for) whereby I eventually discovered a solution that prevents these cumulative updates from installing.

After three failed tries the next try goes into the Recovery Environment.

No, but I might the next time this happens.

Hello there,

There are some known issues in this update KB5003173

System and user certificates might be lost when updating a device from Windows 10, version 1809 or later to a later version of Windows 10. Devices will only be impacted if they have already installed any Latest cumulative update (LCU) released September 16, 2020 or later and then proceed to update to a later version of Windows 10 from media or an installation source which does not have an LCU released October 13, 2020 or later integrated.

If you have already encountered this issue on your device, you can mitigate it within the uninstall window by going back to your previous version of Windows using the instructions here.

Please suspend your update for now. We are working on a resolution and will provide updated bundles and refreshed media in the coming weeks.

"System and user certificates might be lost when updating a device from Windows 10, version 1809 or later to a later version of Windows 10" I have no idea what these certificates are and how they pertain to my issue. My version is 2004.

I installed 32 bit Windows 10 on 64 bit hardware, because I need to run two legacy DOS programs under NTVDM. I spent a LOT of time and effort perfecting their running under Windows 10 so they print and even dial the modem. I'm not about to repeat that process. So I would be reluctant to upgrade to 21H1, not knowing if I'm going to have a working computer afterward. As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

It would be interesting to know what step in the boot process between the logo being displayed and the spinning wheel of dots

Yes, resolution of this issue would be nice!

FYI, Motherboard is ASRock B250M-HDV, CPU is Intel i3-7300, memory is 4GB

I see yet another cumulative update, KB5003637, is now waiting in the wings. So do I suspend it also, or let it install? How will I know that Microsoft has fixed this problem?

Despite my having hidden KB5003637, when I shut down the computer late Thursday night, the screen indicated an update was being installed. However, instead of restarting the computer, it shut down. When I turned it on again, the screen indicated an update was being installed. After that completed and I checked the installed updates, I discovered that KB5003637 had been installed, when I shut down the computer and tried starting it again, it halted after the Windows splash screen displayed, as it has with every other cumulative update.

After powering off and back on one or two times, Windows undertook a self-repair, with successive screens notifying “Diagnosing your PC”, “Attempting repairs”, “Getting Windows ready—Don't turn off your computer”. After it completed and booted, I checked the installed updates and found that KB5003637 had been removed. I was able to shut down and restart the computer thereafter. Upon checking, I discovered KB4023057 is waiting in the wings.

We along with other 32 bit Windows 10 users are also having the same problem with the the last three cumulative updates released by Microsoft.
