unable to ping across VLANs

Hello,

I am having issues network connectivity issues with my VMs. Here is the setup. I have 2 VMs running on the host. The plan is to have these two VMs in their own separate VLAN, VLAN 100. The address space for this VLAN is 10.10.100.x, while the rest of the network, including the host, is 192.168.1.x space. I have set up my router to be the default gateway for this VLAN at 10.10.100.1 and created an external vSwitch with the VLAN box checked with VLAN 100. I have also gone into both VMs and, under Network Adapter settings, selected the vSwitch I created with the VLAN selected. As it stands, my VMs cannot talk to each other and their default gateway, even if they are all on the same subnet. The host is still on the 192.168.1.x space and I could ping it and remote into it from my laptop at .147. Every ping from a VM comes back with a destination unreachable message from the VM itself(loopback address is an exception). I wonder if there are other things I need to do to get the VMs to talk to each other and the internet, other than setting up the vSwitch.

I have disabled the firewalls on both VMs and the host.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi,

I would like to ask if you have solved your issue? I checked our discussion in this blog and figured it out that you once solved your issue by switching to OpenWRT from the default manufacturer firmware for VLANs and this method worked. I am not sure what is your issue now, you mean you can only made a success at that moment and this method failed in the second time? Or, you want us to use other ways to cope with your issue? If your method can work out your issue all the time, then you just stick to it.

Thanks for your support! And if your issue is solved, you can accept answer to the replies you think are helpful, you can even self accept answer.

Joan

Something here may help. Sounds like your physical router may not support vlans.

Thank you for your response. I switched to OpenWRT from the default manufacturer firmware for VLANs. I have set up a subinterface on the router, and I can ping the dg for VLAN 100, 10.10.100.1, from my laptop at 192.168.1.147. This proves that the router does support VLANs. Right? Also, do you think VLAN tagging should be explicitly enabled in the NIC somewhere in the registry?

Hi,

Thanks for your patience!

I would like to check if any progress has been made on your issue. From 4 days ago's comment, it seems that you have already solved your issue. So why you said your issue was still there 2 days ago?

Besides, I think @DSPatrick 's article from 4 days ago describes your issue quite clear. You may need network switch or something like that to let your two VMs communicate with each other. I would like to ask why you avoid using network switch?

Thanks for your support!

Joan
