Item-level recovery possible with on-prem MABS VM backup using disk-based recovery points?

Hi folks,

I've installed Azure Backup Server v3 on an on-prem VM and added some disk storage to it. I've created a protection group using a standalone Hyper-V server and installed the MABS DPM Protection Agent on it. I picked a Hyper-v VM on the server and added it to the protection group. It has successfully backed locally to the MABS short term disk storage as well as to the cloud.

This article: back-up-hyper-v-virtual-machines-mabs

seems to indicate that Item-level recovery can be done from the VM backup provided the MABS server has the Hyper-V role installed on it (mine does).

Unfortunately, I can't seem to see how to recover single items, even when I select a local disk-based recovery point. My only options are to either recover the VM itself, or recover the entire VHD file to some location. Does anyone know how to do this, or if it's even possible?

Thanks for any info!

Hi @IC-2516,

When you see the .VHDX files of your Hyper-V virtual machine during the recovery process, did you try double clicking on the .VHDX files to browse the folder/file structure?

Hmmm... Actually, the backed up VM uses a VHD file rather than a VHDX, but if I select a disk backup of the VM resource itself, then double click it as you suggest, it does display the folder structure, from which I can restore a single-item! Thanks for the tip!

Very bad UI design. The VM item should have had a plus sign next to it to indicate it could be expanded...

Yes, VHD/VHDX doesn't matter, they work the same when you perform an item-level recovery, it is easily to miss this and should indeed be described better.
