How do you create an alias for connection to a managed VM Windows Server 2019 with managed SQL Server 2019?

Cannot create an alias for connection to SQL Server 2019 other than port 1433 that will connect and work. I created an alias using a different port number 57XXX but i cannot connect to the server using that port. When I changed the alias to port 1433, the connection passes and opens sql server. I did add port 57XXX to our inbound firewall. This same type setup is working on a Classic AZure VM with SQL server 2014. What am I missing?

I am not user that I understand this. Is SQL Server listening on port 57XXX? If not, why do you expect to be able to connect?

Or am I missing something?

Hi @PaulBill-8748,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

As Erland mentioned, you should make SQL Server listen on specific port. Please refer to Using Non-Standard Port for SQL Server to get more information about how to configure SQL Server to listen on specific port.

Best regards,
Carrin
