Windows Server 2019 CAL

Hi,

If I want to make Windows Server 2019 to store data for thousands of IoT devices do I need a CAL for each those devices?

The device will transmit data through a CoAP application which I developed myself and will be deployed inside the server, and from the CoAP application it will reroute the data to web API hosted by IIS. The web API then will store the data into MySQL database.

From my understanding, we need CAL for device if the device accessing a windows services or business solution. But for my case I'm not sure. Please help.

Thank you

Audy Syazwan

Hi,
For managing devices, Microsoft offers Server MLs for managing server operating system environments (OSEs).
A “Device CAL” licenses the endpoint device so that the device itself has permission to access the server. Then, anyone using that device would be able to access the server. The people using that device do not need a User CAL.

Before purchasing, you should visit the "How to Buy" section for each product and consult your Microsoft representative or local reseller regarding your specific licensing needs.
For your reference:

Hope above information can help you.

So for my case, each device needs Device CAL in order to access the server. Is that correct?
This device is like a telemetry device that gives water flow reading and depends on a project, the total number of these devices can goes up to millions.
So I think Windows Server 2019 is not a correct server to implement this project as the cost would goes up drastically.

Thank you for your reply.

I think your guess is correct, but based on your situation is a bit complicated, it is recommended that you'd better contact a trained Microsoft licensing specialist regarding your licensing questions.
