Trying to Perfrom an In-Place Upgrade from Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Server 2012 R2 Standard

When I try to run the setup media to do an in-place upgrade from Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Server 2012 R2 Standard the application will start then after copying temp files it gets to starting setup then crashes back to the install now screen. It does not give any error messages, I don't see any abnormalities in the event log either.

I have tried burning the ISO onto a USB drive and a CD but my NAS server does not detect the CD and says that I don't have permission to write to the USB device. I was able to burn the ISO from another computer and make the USB drive and CD available on the network so the NAS server could access it remotely but still same issue every time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I know 2008 Server is EOL and really need to get this upgraded ASAP.

Thank you in advance.

No, in that case you'll need to backup data, clean install, patch fully, restore the data. You can also pursue the in-place route but I'd make sure backups are recent and known to be good since an in-place is a very risky move.

Gotcha. And is there a way to import all that or just put it on an external hard drive and make it accessible to the server? Trying to keep everything as is as possible.

Use any reliable media to store your files during the interim.

Got it. I think that covers what I need, if I need anymore help I'll post in another thread.

Thanks again!

In-place upgrades are never recommended for a number of reasons. Better option is always to clean install, patch fully and migrate roles over. Also check that the hardware supports the operating system and update the ROM bios, firmware before hand.

Thanks for the response DSPatrick. Is there a link on how I would go about this? This will be my first time migrating roles over from a clean install and really don't want to screw something up.

These are the role services that we have now. But under roles itself it has file services.

Thanks for this! Question, in the link you provided the author of the post talks about migrating to a different domain name. We aren't changing any domain names just migrating what we current have to 2012 server instead of 2008. So would I still need to configure namespaces manually to match the imported DFS text file?

Then this one may be more applicable.

It talks about preparing the destination source as if it's going to another migrate to another server. I just want to clarify that all of these roles are staying on the same physical server we just need to upgrade the OS to Server 2012 R2 standard while maintaining the same roles and settings. Would these migration techniques still apply to that?

A clean install is always the best option as this method installs the cleanest files, partitions, file systems, etc.

An in place upgrade is supported by Microsoft:

I keep trying the in place install but when it gets the setting up screen it crashes back to the install now screen without any error or message as to why it wasn't able to complete.
