.url redirects to ntlm site in SharePoint 2019

When a new link is created in a document library to another site collection, and an .url file is created.
Clicking on the .url file, the link redirects to the ntlm site, even though the link does not contain 'ntlm'.
When creating a new link to a location within the same site collection, the .url file goes to the correct site location.

Hello @parkdave-7012

Please perform the following troubleshooting:

1.Does the user have access permissions on both site collections?

2.Whether the site can be accessed normally?

3.Is the url of site collection correct?

In my test, user(Administrator) who have access to both site collection can be redirected normally when they click on .url file.

When a user(User 1) does not have access rights to one site collection, a redirection error will appear.

Thank you @EchoDu-MSFT for your response.

The user is the site admin for both of the sites in question. As a SharePoint admin, I was able to replicate the issue with two different site collections, but we were not able to replicate in our SharePoint 2013 environment. We're able to successfully use external URLs such as 'msn.com', but a different site collection within the SharePoint 2019 environment, it redirects to the 'ntlm' site.

Previously, we made the update to the Cross Firewall Access Zone due to SharePoint links created within SharePoint redirecting to the 'ntlm' sites, which corrected that issue.

Hi @parkdave-7012 ,

Thanks for your reply.

After you set the Firewall, can you redirect normally in SharePoint 2019?

If not, can you provide specific steps? For example, what is your external URL? Your external URL is AAM(Alternate Access Mappings)?

Have a nice day!😀

Thanks,
Echo Du

Hi @EchoDu-MSFT!

We had the issue a few months back with the copied/shared URL redirect to the ntlm site, and setting the Cross Firewall access zone fixed the issue. So when the .url redirected to the ntlm site, I wasn't sure if there was anything else which might cause this issue. Since the .url link is created directly from the site URL, what would cause the link to be redirected? And why would this only happen with a different site collection URL?

I have checked the external URL and the AAM mappings. Both the 2013 and 2019 environments are set up the same way. Like I mentioned, the 2013 environment doesn't have the issue.

Thank you.
