Windows Server 2016 Files Server with Storage Spaces running on ESXi

Greetings,
I am running Windows Server 2016 File Server as a VM on VMware ESXi. I want to create another VM for the file server, but this time I will be using Storage Spaces. I wanted something inside MS Windows to work like LVM in Linux - That's why I have decided to use Storage Spaces. My question is, if later on I want to migrate the attached virtual hard disk drive from one data store to another - I am talking on the VMware level, will it have any side effects on the configured pools, virtual hard disks and volume?!

Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum!

Based on your demand, firstly I would like to identify one thing:
"migrate the attached virtual hard disk drive from one data store to another - I am talking on the VMware level"
——What do you mean "on the VMware level"? Did you mean that you would like to move a virtual machine disk from a platform using one VMware product to a different platform using another VMware product?

Basically, if you can configure your storage space properly with your VMware platform, then I suppose that vhd migration should not affect your storage configuration. However, it can be more reliable if you could contact support engineers from VMware, to let them run a test for you. I wish I could help you conduct the test, while at present, I don't have VMware platform. As a result, I am unable to help you get a more precise result. When you contact VMware's supports, you are supposed to tell them more details about your environment, like what I query you in the first place.

In addition, you should make sure you build your storage space with VMware VMs appropriately. You can also query this demand with supporters from VMware. An initial configuration like this can be crucial to your future operation, so be careful with this configuration. I did some research on that while only find the requirements for configuration guidance for deploying S2D, the enhanced version of storage space. If you are interested, here is the link:

Thanks for your support and understanding! Have a nice day! : )

Besides, would you please help me Accept Answer? I think your question is valuable and in this way you can put your blog on top of our forum, so people who have a similar issue will get their solution more quickly.

BR,
Joan
