What is the Workflows site collection feature

Hello,

As a site collection admin, I've noticed that the Workflows feature is not activated. I assume this is by default. I've also noticed the Three-state workflow site collection feature which is activated. What's the difference between these features?

@DuboseMicheleADIT-6155,

The default Workflows feature includes following 2010 out-of-box workflow:

Before you activate it, these workflows will not be used when we add a new workflow.

Approval
The Approval workflow routes a document or item to a group of people for approval.

Collect Feedback

The Collect Feedback workflow is very similar to the Approval workflow. It routes items or documents to a group of people, but in this case, the workflow is designed to get feedback from the approvers. The feedback is compiled and sent back to the person who initiated the workflow.

Collect Signatures:
The Collect Signatures workflow routes documents created in a Microsoft application to a group of people to collect their digital signatures.

Three-state workflow feature will available after you activate the related feature:

The Three-state workflow tracks the status of an issue or item through three states and two transitions between the states, which help track high volume issues.

@JulieWang-MSFT,
I do not understand. If my farm is SharePoint 2016, why would I active 2010 workflows? Also, I do not understand your statement-"Before you activate it, these workflows will not be used when we add a new workflow."

@DuboseMicheleADIT-6155,

Since these workflow templates based on SharePoint 2010 compatibility mode, so i call them 2010 workflows, and SharePoint server 2013/2016/2019 still support them, which means higher versions are allowed to run legacy workflows from previous versions of SharePoint Server.

We also call them SharePoint built in workflows.

If we disable the workflow feature in the site collection feature, when we create a new workflow as shown below, there are no related workflow templates to be choosen:
