2016 RDS VM Admin User Profile Issues

I am having an issue where logging directly into one of our RDS VM servers by mstsc /admin. The admin profile never loads. I can see a flash of the start menu, but Windows never fully comes up. This is configured using FSLogix profiles. I can login as a normal user and the start menu appears as normal. This is just when using the domain admin accounts. The server is fully patched and have already run a sfc/dism on the server. Any thoughts?

Hi Joan,

Thanks for the reply back. It is definitely a profile issue as I am able to log into all the RDS servers with a test Admin Account just fine. I recreated the TSProfile for the admin account with no such luck. What would be the next step? I didn't have any local profiles, I checked. Thank you for the assistance.

Best,
Scott

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

In this case, I will transfer your case to my colleague who takes charge of TSprofile, he will come to talk to you very soon.

Thanks for your support!

Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum!

Based on your description, we need to take a general troubleshooting to identify whether your issue is related with FSlogix profiles or with our RDS. You can go to %SystemRoot%\System32\winevt to pick out any relevant logs when you encountered this issue.

Basically, since your normal logging works fine, then your issue may be related more to FSlogix profiles. After my research, your issue may be that a Local profile already exists and it will take precedence over the FSLogix one and it will result in not having your FSLogix created. This will also impact you when you already have FSLogix profiles and they are not loaded. Solution can be found in:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/fslogix-blog/why-my-fslogix-profile-is-not-being-created-or-loaded/ba-p/1303064

Thanks for your understanding! Besides, if my work is helpful to you, would you please help me Accept Answer? An accepted blog can be put on top of our forum, then people who have a similar issue can get to the solution more quickly.

Have a nice day! : )

BR,
Joan

HI ScottFitzgerald-8976,

“It is definitely a profile issue as I am able to log into all the RDS servers with a test Admin Account just fine.”
1.Did you set Fslogix profile for this test admin account?
2.How many domain admin account in your environment?
Is your current issue only happen on specified domain admin account?
Is your current issue only happen on any domain admin account with fslogix profile?

3.If we use mstsc to open remote desktop connection app directly(not using mstsc /admin) then remote access the target RD session host, will the same issue happen?
4.If we add this issue admin account to the FSLogix Profile Exclude List group then logon the issue session host again, will the same issue happen?

Hi JiaYou,

In looking into this further FSLogix isn't installed. The name of the folder with all of the TSProfiles was called FSLogix but no software is installed anywhere in this environment. So that leads me to believe these are just roaming profiles (my apologies, I inherited this environment.) I hope this can clarify things - to answer your questions
1) No
2) 7
3)Yes, using just the mstsc method still yields the same results.
4) N/A - I don't even have the group.

Let me know if you need further details.

Thanks,
Scott

HI

1.Is it possible to disable roaming profile for one test domain admin account?
If we do that, will the same issue happen?

2." I can see a flash of the start menu, but Windows never fully comes up."
Could you please share the picture?

3.Is there any difference policy both normal account and domain admin account?

4."I am having an issue where logging directly into one of our RDS VM servers by mstsc /admin"
What's the difference between the normal RDS server and issue RDS server?
we can enter below command on both normal RDS server and issue RDS server respectively to check which difference about domain polices?
Is there logon script running on issue RDS server?
gpresult /h c:\normalrds.html
gpresult /h c:\issuerds.html

1) I haven't disabled roaming for one test account. This is because another test domain admin account can load the start screen and run everything just fine. It is just my domain admin account that has the Start menu flash.
2) 111421-rds.png

3) I checked the corresponding gpresults and they are identical.

I am getting a User Profile Service Event ID 1542 error whenever I try to login with this account. It also takes it about 30 seconds to login as it sits on the User Profile Service screen for about that long. I assume this shows profile corruption. I've removed the name, SID, etc almost every instance from the registry I could find. Still cannot get the start menu to load. What could I be missing?

HI

When blackscreen issue happen, we can logon local admin or other domain admin account on issue server then check below information:
The winlogon.exe process should automatically load the UsrClass.dat, if it is not, please see below.
1) You need to make sure that the classes registry file exists for issue account, it is usually located in the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist doesn't have an entry for \REGISTRY\USER\MySID_Classes UsrClass.dat file
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\\UsrClass.dat
111508-13.png

2) If the file exists, then you need to check the existence of the key in the registry, for this we can execute the following command at the command prompt (cmd.exe):
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
In case the result is:
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.
then the problem is related to the absence of this key in the registry.
Usually the indicated problem in the topic is connected with the absence of the "Local AppData" parameter, but it is better to restore all the keys in this registry path, after that the problem should be solved. For example, taking from another working server as a template.
It is important to create a System State backup or create a system restore point before any manipulation.
An example of a key for the Administrator account (by default), you can find at the following link : User-Shell-Folders.zip
