Configure Drive Maps preference extension policy processing

Hello,

We are doing all of our Drive Mappings using Group Policy Preferences in Replace mode. I started getting complaints of 'file explorer' crashing and figured out it was due to the drive mapping being replaced while users were using the mapped drive. I found a solution being the following setting 'Configure Drive Maps preference extension policy processing' and setting it not to process the replacement if there were no changes. That resolved that issue but now when users log in they get a toast notification stating 'unable to map all drives' but when we look in File Explorer all the drives mapped successfully.

Is there something I'm missing?

Hi

Did you have set the policy; Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon ?

I suspect the GPO fail as it might execute too fast at login, but as the drive are already mapped the impact is not there.

Thanks

Philippe

Hi,
Welcome to ask here!
Would you please tell why did you use the replace mode?

Based on my understanding, if you use the replace mode, when the group policy refresh, it will not only create new objects, but destroy old ones, too.
When the group policy refresh in the background and that will lead in closing Windows explorer...
So, it is suggested to use the create or update mode.
If there are any questions, welcome to ask here!

Thanks. Yes, I am using 'Replace' mode and those details are in my original post. I have implemented the setting to not process Drive Maps Policy when there is no change, which should resolve the issue........but it leads to that drive maps notification.

Hi,
What's the version of your DCs and clients?
Would you please share a screenshot of the setting:'Configure Drive Maps preference extension policy processing
I would try to do a test in my lab to see if the message will be dispalyed.

Hi,
Thanks for the information collection.
I did a test in my lab, but the notification stating 'unable to map all drives' didn't display.
If all the drives are successfully mapped and can be updated successfully, it is suggested to monitor it for a period.
Or you can consider check the whole processes for applying the group policy through the gpsvc log.
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askds/2015/04/17/a-treatise-on-group-policy-troubleshootingnow-with-gpsvc-log-analysis/

From my side, i will try to make the group policy simpler by using the update mode.
And i just need to configure the mapping drives for users and don't need to configure any computer policy related.
It will make the GPO to be managed easier.
