Powerpoint unstable after changing size

In a template I made it isn't possible to save the presentation after the size of a waterfall chart has changed.
This issue only appears in presentations based on this template and only with the waterfall chart type, on any pc.
The first error message is "An error occurred while PowerPoint was saving the file". After clicking ok, a new error message is displayed: "We're sorry, something went wrong that might make PowerPoint unstable. Please save your presentations and restart Powerpoint."

Can anyone tell what triggers this issue?

Thanks!

On my test environment, I could not reproduce your issue, and I have some following questions.

  1. Where is this template file stored?
Such as on a shared folder or on local disk.
Do you have the chance to know which version of PowerPoint created this template?

  2. What's the format these presentations saved? Such as .pptx.
Please change the format to save these fies as other formats.
Besides, please check whether you are able to use "Save As" feature.
If these files are saved on a shared folder, it's recommended to go to File > Options > Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings, in Trusted Locations, add the location of
network shared drive to the Trusted Locations.

  3. How did you create the waterfall chart?
If it was inserted in PowerPoint directly, I suggest you create a new template, and copy the chart from Excel or Word for a test.

  4. Did you adjust size via dragging the chart box using mouse?
You may also go to Format Chart Area, enter the size you need.

Thank you for your answer!

In answer to your questions:
1. On my computer the file is on the local hard drive. In the company I made the template for, the file is on a server.
The template is made with Office 365 version in March 2021. I keep my Office apps updated.
2. From the moment the issue is triggerd, no other way of saving is possible.
I tried to make a new presentation, one slide, inserted a waterfall chart changed the format of the chart and tried to save the presentation to another format, but this results in the same problem.
3. I tried different ways to insert the waterfall chart. In powerpoint with the default data, in powerpoint with other data, in another presentation (based on another template) and then copy the chart to this presentation, in Excel and copy the chart to the presentation, nothing works.
4. I tried changing the size with the mouse, in the adjustment panel and in the ribbon. Same issue.

I wasn't able to trigger the same issue in any other template. No template provided by Microsoft, no self-made template. So there must be something wrong with my template, but this is the first time I come accross an issue like this. And the client wants it solved, logically.

Thanks for looking into this problem.

Please create a new prensentation, delete other sliders and just keep this waterfall chart in one slider, then adjust its size to do a test.

You may also reduce choosing options of Chart Element, such as Axis Titles, Chart Title.
