when attempting to access my site using chrome, there are long periods where I hit the "Hey, App Service Developers" splash page. If I use a diff browser like firefox or IE, it works fine. This definitely seems like a browser issue but I cant seem to track down what is causing this. I've had another user say they have had the same issue, using Chrome they get the app service developers splash page. Is it possible some configuration in my app service could cause this odd behavior and therefore I can correct it?

App service running php. again the site works on other browsers just fine so you would think that the necessary configuration must be correct to serve my site. the problem browser is Chrome Version 83.0.4103.116 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Im pretty new to azure so troubleshooting is an effort...so trying to see where best to focus my efforts.

I understand the concern and frustration with this problem.

As you mentioned, it could be due to your Chrome browser, if you haven't done this already so, just to isolate you could please try these steps:

a) Kindly check if Chrome Incognito browser session helps.
b) Clear cache/cookies/temp files and then test in the Chrome normal session.

Could you please share your WebApp name directly or indirectly (share partial WebApp and subscription ID), I will test this on multiple Chrome browser with similar version.

To access App Service diagnostics, navigate to your App Service app in the Azure portal. In the left navigation, click on Diagnose and solve problems – Checkout the tile for “Diagnostic Tools” and “Availability and Performance”.

Azure provides built-in diagnostics to assist with debugging an App Service app. In this article, you learn how to enable diagnostic logging and add instrumentation to your application, as well as how to access the information logged by Azure.

Just following-up, in general scenarios:

You could review the Startup script and configuration for the PHP frame as mentioned in this document.
Configure a Windows PHP app for Azure App Service
Configure a Linux PHP app for Azure App Service

By default, Azure App Service points the root virtual application path (/) to the root directory of the deployed application files (sites\wwwroot).

On Linux, the container runs Apache, you can rewrite the URL to public/index.php with a single .htaccess file in our root directory:
Ensure that Rewrite rules are appropriate to map URLs to public/index.php file.

The default PHP image for App Service uses Apache, and it doesn't let you customize the site root for your app. To work around this limitation, add an .htaccess file to your repository root.

thanks, as of this moment, the site is working and loading fine with chrome. Maybe there's something to do with when I make an update, push code to github, and the deployment script runs??? Something ill need to test out.

I've configured the site path to be the custom path needed. i have a /public folder that I expose my website files. I believe im using the Azure App Service (Windows?) image. Again, as far as I can tell I believe the configuration is good.

app service name is covid19-hix and subscription id is afb1xxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxx

James, thanks for sharing additional details. Since the issue occurs only when new code changes are pushed; that is the WebApp doesn't work only on Chrome (but works fine on IE and Firefox) apparently it is related to browser only, from the initial check. With the WebApp details, I will check on this further and respond to you shortly.

I should say that I do not KNOW that it's related to code push, it was something possible as the likely time I would test my site/verify would be after I made a code change and deployed. Just last night though, around ~8pm HST, it was failing to load. I didn't make any code changes nor did I deploy anything that day. One of my users was having the issue with Safari on iphone. I couldn't reproduce on my end though at the same time.

Thanks for the response and sharing additional details.
It's perhaps due to max compute resource serving the request (CPU maxed out, if it's smaller instance) ; at that moment randomly showing-up on clients (browsers), to isolate you may scale-up (/scale-out) the App Service Plan and also ensure that "Always-on' settings is enabled on the WebApp.

You could try the F12 developer tools in the browser(s) and see specifically where it hangs, compare a good trace with a bad one. You can also do a WireShark trace (for example steps) to review where the lag is coming from. Kindly let us know for further help on this.
