What is causing the following error and how do I get past it?

  • Imported .docx, xlsx, pptx files from Win10 20H2 PC to Mac BigSur 11.4 using Migration Assistant
  • Files import into Users\Shared folder on Mac
  • Downloaded MS Office 2019 on Mac
  • Tried to open multiple files on Mac with Office, make edits and then save (tried with docx, xlsx, pptx with same results)
  • Receive the following alerts:

1) Your changes could not be saved to ‘filename.xlsx' because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file.

2) Sorry, we couldn't find /var/folders/j2/p8vdyrk923x17874btmpt1wr0000gn/T/com.microsoft.Excel/TemporaryItems/NSIRD_Excel_eKwebw/DF812000.MACTF. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?

3) Your changes could not be saved to ‘filename.xlsx', but were saved to a temporary document named 'DF812000.MACTF'. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name.

I would prefer not to save as a new file.

    @TML7

Maybe this issue is releated to Privacy settings on your MacBook.
Please choose Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab > Full Disk Access, check if Office applications ( Word, Excel, PowerPoint and etc) have enough permissions to access the drive and files, you may tick the box of these apps, to add an app, click the Add button, select the app in the list, then click Open.

Please also refer to "Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac", make sure you have read & write permission for these files. (Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.)

Besides, I suggest you try to move one file to other location to check this issue.

Any updtes, you may post back.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried your multiple suggestions with success...

    1) If I moved the file from the Shared folder to my user folder, I was able to update a docx, xlsx, pptx with no sharing violation

    OR

    2) I was able to update a file under the Shared folder with no sharing violation after I added each MS Office application to Full Disk Access, AND I modified the file/folder Sharing & Permissions to include Read & Write permissions to the admin

Tried granting full acces to One Drive and to all the specific Microsoft apps. Nothing worked. In the end, said to save on Mac. It still chose the one drive folder (i am totally new to mac so don't know what it means, seems to mean also local drive saving?? (but isn't that the case anyway?) and then it saved without a saving error. These are the types of issues that are hateful to figure out.
