@j8g9-3035, The reason you are not seeing the "Alternate Authentication Phone" option here is because the "call to phone" in your Azure MFA server settings is not checked.

Also, the screenshot that you shared, there also we see the "what's your preferred option?" is set to "Text code to my authentication phone". With this option selected, its not eligible for an alternate number, hence you not seeing the alternate number option here.

To fix this, you need to login to the Azure Portal using a Global Administrator account or Authentication Administrator account and select the option "call to phone" and then save the settings.

@j8g9-3035 ,
How to check the Azure MFA server settings?

Ans: You can find the settings under https://portal.azure.com -> Azure AD -> Users blade -> "Multi-Factor Authentication" menu -> Service settings

@j8g9-3035,

Since you already have the MFA enabled for you can set the Secondary/Alternate Phone Number for MFA by following the steps mentioned below:

To add a secondary phone number:

  1. Sign in to https://myapps.microsoft.com

  2. Select your account name in the top right, then select Profile.

  3. Select Additional security verification.

  4. On the Additional security verification page, check the box next to Alternate authentication phone.

  5. Enter your secondary phone number in the text box.

  6. Select Save to save your changes.

And yes, if the Primary Phone Verification is not available, you would need to manually select the option "Use a different verification option" to use the Alternate Phone for the verification.

Or,

You can also go directly on the following URL "MFASetup" and update the secondary phone number for Alternate number for MFA.
