Why the default column 'Assign to' can't be sortable/filterable

I have a task list in SharePoint 2013. Tasks will be assigned to team members so a column 'Assigned To' was set up in 'people' format only. The view Filter was set as 'Show all items in this view'. However, This column is not able to be sortable or filterable in the view. I received error message: Cannot show the value of the filter. The field may not be filterable, or the number of items returned exceed the list view threshold enforced by the administrator. One thing I want to mention here is this column title is colored in light grey which is not same as other filterable columns which are in color light red.

Please advise how to make this column sortable and filterable?

Thanks,
Annie Tang

Hi @AnnieTang-6847

1.Per my test, Please check your “Assigned to” column settings, Allow multiple selections: check “Yes” Allow selection of: check “People Only” Choose from: check “All Users” Show field: select “Name (with presence)”.

2. How many rows do you have in this list? If there are more than 5,000 rows in it. Filter will fail as it exceeds the default threshold value configured. You could change it in SharePoint 2013 Central Administration.
Central Administration > Application Management > Manage web applications > General Settings > Resource Throttling > List View Threshold

Hi @AnnieTang-6847,

I'm checking how the things are going on about this issue. Is there any progress on this issue?

Hi Casey,

I figured it out. 'Assigned To' is a default column which is not sortable by SharePoint. If we want the data to be filterable in this column, the people name will have to be presented in full name. Not sure why MS designed this column in this way?

Thanks again,
Annie Tang
