DFS Referral Issue

Hi Community,

For our customer, we had only one virtual Windows Server 2016 with AD, and File Service roles.

Recently we deployed a new WS 2019 in their office for redundancy.

We have DFS configured with the on-site server referral status enabled. The other server on the data center has a disabled referral status.

So now we have users who complain that they cannot save files in their shared drives, which are mapped via GPO.

Clearing DFS History or rebooting the user's PC clears the issue

Does anyone happen to have experienced something similar?

Below is before and after reboot:

We fixed the issue by applying the correct GPO.

Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum!

Firstly, I would like to conduct a few general troubleshooting to your issue:
1) Does this issue only exist on the users who store their files via GPO? Is this issue is a common issue for all of the users using GPO, or just one user or a couple of the whole users?

2) This issue happens after you set up datacenter server (I guess it is your new WS 2019 in their office for redundancy). or happens all the time?

3) Is there any error codes or messages that your users have when they found that they cannot get access to the shared folder? I would like you to check error messages on their computers, to see if the issue is that the users cannot access to the shared folder or, they can access to but cannot store their files on the folder (i.e. cannot adjust the folder).

4) You create a DFS namespace, right? Now we need to clarify whether you cannot access to the share or cannot get to the namespace.

After research, the issue may be related to offline files corruption and the solution you present here is the answer. You clear history and this action may clear the corrupted offline files, then you reboot the pc to see your issue is solved. Offline files are disabled by GPO on desktops. However, the GPO is applied at the OU, and there's a chance the desktop was in the laptop OU unintentionally.

This is only my assumption, you still need to follow my steps to do a general troubleshoot.

Thanks for your support!

Joan

HI Joan,

Thank you for having a look.

  1. Some of the users are complaining, even though the rest of user might not be using the service.

  2. The issue started right after we deployed the new WS2019.

  3. Error message the user gets is: You don't have access to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission.

  4. Looks to me like it can access the namespace.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!

I think you still need to test if your GPO works properly with your new Datacenter. So could you tell me how you configured your GPO to connect your users with your local computer?

Besides, have you considered my assumption? And have you checked log information on your users' pc?

Thanks for your support!

Joan
