After Interrupted Windows 10 install (while in legacy support). Windows wont boot / complete installation or detect bootable USB drive anymore (Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro)

Context/how one issue led to another:

Initial issue: I was experiencing a BootLoop with a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop.

So I took below steps:

How current issue started:

  • When it rebooted to complete the install, I might have plugged out my USB drive at an akward time (when laptop had already restarted - somewhere between the Lenovo logo and the Windows logo).

  • Then at Windows logo., tt took a very very long time (no activity). So I powered it off then restarted. Windows logo showed up. Started loading and at around 5% or 6% i believe. I got a blue screen error stating "Your computer encountered a problem and needs to restart". Then it automatically restarted. And upon restart, immediatly after the Lenovo logo, got "Your pc couldn't start properly error code 0xc000001".

  • So it rebooted and ever since, it keeps getting back to the same errors in the same order. First attempt. Error 1. Then upon auto restart Error 2..

What I tried so far:

  • On that screen I tried the options from F1 to F9. I tried "Safe Mode" to no avail. Says "Windows cannot complete installation in safe mode. To continue installing windows restart computer"".

  • I tried Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt. Tried editing registry as explained here (Method 1): https://windowsreport.com/computer-restarted-unexpectedly/ to no avail

Notes:
Automatic Repair is not available anymore (probably because I deleted partitions during install).

And my laptop wont detect USB drive at boot (not in BIOS nor Boot Menu): probably because I plugged it out at an akward time during install and/or it is still in the middle of an interrupted install.

Additional info:

  • Windows 10 Fresh install was made when in legacy mode.

  • Now EFI is empty in BIOS.

  • Boot Menu only shows HD.

  • USB Drive initially used during failed install is nowhere to be seen anymore (not in Boot Menu nor Legacy Options in BIOS)

Are there any suggestions that could allow to either:
- complete the interrupted installation
- or access the USB drive again to repair or restart installation process

Thanks in advance

Hi,
It is more difficult to complete an interrupted installation at this stage.
During the entire install scenario, early on in the process Windows will copy all the files it needs from the USB drive to your hard drive. Typically after the first reboot, you can remove it. If the installation process needs it again, it will ask for it.

I think its still trying to boot from USB since you changed boot order. So it keeps booting into setup.
Add the hard drive back to the boot order in BIOS, then it will boot.
Then you can try to see if it can be repaired or reinstalled.

Hope above information can help you.

Hi @JennyFeng-MSFT Thanks for your response

Something odd happened after the intterrupted install.

Before the install attempt:
(- HD could be seen in the EFI available options from BIOS.
- USB could also be seen in the Legacy available options BIOS
- Both could be seen in the Boot Menu

After the failed install (which I ran while in Legacy Support / Legacy First from above configuration. To force boot from USB. It was not done by changing boot order or via Boot Menu):
- HD is not in the EFI availalble options anymore (EFI is now empty). It is now strangely dispayed in the Legacy available options (which might be due to fact that I ran install in Legacy. Cleaning all pre-existing partitions during that install)
- USB cannot be seen anywhere anymore
- Only HD is see in Boot Menu

You might be right. It might still be trying to run from something that it cannot see anymore.
IWhich could be the HD itself. Which oddly is in Legacy options: but even when I boot through Boot Menu. Or switch to egacy support / Legacy first, i get the same outcome.

Best option could be to get back to a point where it can see the USB drive again. So I could try and repair or re-install.
But I'm not sure where to beging to get back to that point.

I'm opened to any other suggestion

Well managed to get the USB Drive back in the Boot Menu.
Not sure what solved it.

So I restarted the installation from scratch.
Then at reboot to complete installation.
On Windows 10 Logo sreen: BSOD showed up at around 3% in: DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG BSOD error
Now stuck in that loop again. With BSOD saying DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG BSOD error (or sometimes DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE).
Looks like it could be either Driver related (due to malware or similar).

What do you think?

I'm thinking about. Trying the install again. See if this is consistent behaviour.
If so, try bootable antivirus to check malware coulld be the initial cause of this mess.

Only thing is my USB drive is gone from Boot Menu again. So I'll need to get back to seeing it in order to confirm if BSOD is consistent throught install attempts & if using bootable anti virus could tell me anything more about this.

Hi,
I agree with you, it may take several attempts to determine the main cause of the problem.
It is recommended that you troubleshoot according to the suggestions given by the following website:
https://appuals.com/driver-pnp-watchdog/
Note: This is a third-party link and we do not have any guarantees on this website. And Microsoft does not make any guarantees about the content.

Also, if you recently added hardware to the system, try removing or replacing it. Or check with the manufacturer to see if any patches are available.
And try running the hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer.
