Settings Catalog vs. other configuration methods

I was suprised not getting this setting found under Administrative Template but then discovered it under Setting Catalog.

https://oofhours.com/2021/04/22/turn-off-news-interests-page-via-policy/

  1. Is that a trend, that now all new stuff will be placed for configuration only under Settings Catalog?

  2. If so, will all older setting be transfered to Settings Catalog as well (from Restrictions and Admin Templates).

This is some admin overheat to track different settings under different sub categoeries / templates /methods. All should be in one place I think.

As I understand Settings catalog is existing templates and most previous CSPs if not all. Microsoft is continuously building it so all new settings are expected to make it to settings catalog if nothing else.

@yannara Thanks for posting in our Q&A. I know you have confusion about the setting that we can find under Setting Catalog but not under Administrative Template.

For this issue, I have done a lot of research. For Settings catalog, it lists all the settings you can configure, and all in one place. It simplifies how you create a policy, and how you see all the available settings. So, yes, it is a trend and more settings are continually being added.

Based on my understanding, I think the older settings are both in Settings Catalog and Templates. Templates is also useful.

For the setting "News and Interests", currently, there is no such settings in Administrative Template, but I find we can configure it via a custom profile. Here is the CSP:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/mdm/policy-csp-experience#experience-allownewsandinterestsonthetaskbar

Hope the above information will help.

@yannara Yes, there is no this direct setting for News and Interests under Administrative Template. All I know is more settings are continually being added under Settings Catalog.

Currently, we can follow the principle of simplicity and use which side is easy to set up. And all settings we can find under Settings Catalog is really a trend.

Thanks again for your find and let more and more people know this.
