File server not showing user permissions, advanced settings greyed out

Windows server 2012 R@ domain controller and separate file server.

All has been well for years, and just this week when I look at the file server and the shared folders / security on them:

  • users have the PID ID and a blue question mark

  • I can not click advanced to turn off inheritance as it is greyed out.

  • if I add a user, the check name will resolve to the correct user.

  • Also, I recently had the blue login page where I could not enter a username / password on the file server

Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum!

Firstly, to better understand your production environment and what happended to your shared permission, would you please send the screenshots for the four issues you have mentioned:
1) users have the PID ID and a blue question mark.
——Also click on the blue question mark to see the warning information
2) I can not click advanced to turn off inheritance as it is greyed out.
3) if I add a user, the check name will resolve to the correct user.
4) I recently had the blue login page where I could not enter a username / password on the file server

In addition, you have depicted that you have a 2012 R2 DC and a seperate file server, so they are physical machines or VMs? Or one is physical, the other is virtual? Is your seperate file server also 2012 R2? You need to give me the illustration about your environment more in detail.

Finally, please go to %SystemRoot%\System32\winevt to find relevant logs during the period when you encountered your problem. What actions did you do before this problem occurred, like Windows Update? You are also recommended to post any error messages or codes that you can find in your logs.

Thanks for your support!

BR,
Joan

Thanks Joan.

I have been able to get most problems solved. I can now see the details, but oddly any time I see the administrator in the list, it has a red X on the icon.

I also seems very slow bringing up the user details. IE - like it is having trouble talking to the DC.

Both are physical servers running Windows 2012 R2. All updates.

Hi,

Thanks for your update!

Based on my research, you can try two approaches to solve Red X issue:
1) Go to start, right click on my computer and select manager. In the Computer Management Window, select Local User and Group node on the left side. Select users. Select the user that you are having problem with. Right click and properties. Then uncheck the check mark "Account is disabled". Then restart the computer to see the changes.

2) Try this re-building of user profile:
1. Because there is a red X for administrator, we could delete account for administrator in security table and add it again
2. Rebuild Windows profile for local administrator

For slow performance issue, where did you observe user details? If you saw the information from Computer Management, you can read this article to solve your issue:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/networking/populate-client-sessions-slow

Thanks for your support! Hope to hear that all of your problems have been solved next time!

Joan
