Impact of deactivating the Limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature

Hello,

I have a SharePoint 2016 farm. I have an internal site and external site. I have a requirement to provide granular level permissions to individual folders in a document library. I attempt to do this by clicking the Share function on the folder but get a message that I cannot because of the Limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature. What is this feature used for? Are there features that are dependent on this feature? What is the impact of disabling it?

Hi @DuboseMicheleADIT-6155 ,

As this official article mentioned:

And the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature requires the limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature to work correctly. so if you disable the feature, the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature mayn’t work in some ways.

Unless you don’t use the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature, you can share a folder with other users and other users can enter the folder normally. if you enable the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature, the limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature will be enabled accordingly. The users who you shared the folder with will be granted the limited-access permission and become unable to enter the folder and get the error messages below. So if you activated the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature, there are two options for you to move forward:

  1. if you want to use the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature, you will lose the feature of sharing a folder. you can share files in the folder with other users instead.

  2. if you don’t use the sharepoint server publishing infrastructure feature, you can disable the limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature to restore the feature of sharing a folder.

@ElsieLu-MSFT,
The SharePoint server publishing infrastructure feature is activated. I'm unsure if it was activated manually or by default. What is this feature used for? As far as sharing files, that seems cumbersome since there can be multiple files in a folder. Is there a way to share files in bulk instead of having to click on each file then share?

@DuboseMicheleADIT-6155 ,

For your questions:
Q1.The SharePoint server publishing infrastructure feature is a very important feature in SharePoint.

If this feature is not active, many features cannot be used, for example:
- The publishing site can’t be saved as a template.
- The enterprise wiki site can’t be saved as a template.
- The team site with Publishing feature enabled can’t be saved as a template.
- The site with Community Site feature can’t be saved as a template.
- The site that has ever had Publishing or Community Site features enabled can’t be saved as a template.

Q2. There is currently no OOTB way to achieve this requirement. SharePoint is very specific about their Security, you could create a Folder which will contain documents to be shared and then Share this folder using "Share With".
