Unable to add External Switch Hyper-V

Hi, I am trying to add an external switch in Hyper-V but everytime it gives an error. I wouldlike to point out that the error is given only for the external switch and not the interal or the private switch. I have done the regular troubleshooting steps of re-enabling the Hyper-V but it follows a certain pattern for the error.
When I try to add the external switch for the first time after I re-enable to Hyper-V, I get an error saying that "Adding ports to the switch <Name> failed". After that if I try to add the external switch, it gives an error saying "Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections." Please help me I am at a loss. I have reset my wifi adapter. Re-installed the adapter, used the internal switch trick but doesn't work. I need the internet connection for my guest OS.

Thanks and regards

The issue has been resolved thanks to @YuhanDeng-MSFT and @DSPatrick. Thanks to both of your for the quick replies.
I don't understand what the problem was but it has been resolved by the repair install of the host OS. I can now add and remove switches as per my convenience.
I chose to keep all my stuff and it remained as is. Very happy with the support.

Hi, thank you for replying. I believe the firmware and the driver for the controller are both up to date.
Also, I have gone through most of the common resolutions to the problems but none have helped. I would like to mention that I am running it for personal use.

Thanks and regards

What host hypervisor is being used?

Sorry but I didn't really get your question. The only hypervisor that is installed is the Hyper-V available via the Windows Features.

The simplest solution may be to use the default switch for the guest. Otherwise the pc vendor will be your best resource to trouble shoot problems with the hardware.

Actually I went for the external one because the default wasn't able to provide internet connection to the guest OS. Thank you for the support. I'll keep looking for solutions though.

Sounds like something is badly broken. Another option may be to clean install the host.

I really want to avoid doing that. I've just recovered from an unable to boot issue and had to clean install.

Hi Divyanshu,
Is there any related event id or error code to this issue? We need more information before we can deal with it.
Here’s a case that might help:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/Lync/en-US/9041c690-8c0f-4f09-9f08-34e84e6fa42f/failed-to-connect-ethernet-switch-port-the-system-cannot-find-the-file-specified-0x80070002?forum=virtualmachingmgrhyperv

Also to do a quick fix, you can try reinstalling Hyper-V feature and try again.

Thanks for your time.
Best regards,
Danny

Hi, thank you for replying. There's no error code or any description attached with this issue. That is what's actually bothering me because I cannot narrow down the problem. Also I have tried the EasyFix tried by Microsoft already and it didn't work. I ran it again regardless and then tried to add an external switch after it but it failed. According to the article, I tried to remove the default switch but it won't go. So I am re-installing Hyper-V and the first thing I will try is the removal of the default switch. I will keep you updated about the results.

Thanks and regards

Hello again. I am unable to remove the default switch. I have tried to remove it from the virtual manager itself and from the powershell but it's not happening. Any idea about how can I force it?
Also after the re-installation, the issue still persists.

Thanks and regards

Hi Divyanshu,
I think that might be a built in error. Would you just create another switch and move all the configurations to it?That should help.

Thanks for your time.
Best regards,
Danny

Hi, thank you for replying. What kind of switch should I create? Internal or private?
Also, in the mean time I ran check disk for windows drive and it made corrections to the file system. I tried to add an external switch after that but still the error.

Thanks and regards

Hi Divyanshui,
This is weird.
Would you try the below method and see if you can find anything relevant?

It should report something if there’s any issue.

Thanks for your time.

Hi, thank you for replying.
There are several errors as you can see below. The most frequent one in Networking is "Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections." with the event id 26144. There are two other event ids associated with errors. The one with id 26050 states, "Switch create failed, name = 'A5D95FAB-62B7-49E1-B21F-08A1D8C06502', friendly name = 'HyperEx': Not found (0x80041002)." The one with id 26138 states, "Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch."
In admin, there's two errors with event ids 16300 and 16320. the one with event id 16300 states, "Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: Unspecified error (0x80004005). (Virtual machine ID F389129D-1D33-4160-A87C-EDDED6C930A6)". The one with event id 16320 states, "Cannot load a checkpoint configuration: Unspecified error (0x80004005). Hi Divyanshui,
Here’s a similar case:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fb6728fe-84a1-4492-a4a9-749a957590ed/hyperv-unable-to-add-external-network?forum=WinPreview2014General
It seems that this could happen if the host NIC drops out of device manager (sign of a failing NIC) and then gets re-detected and listed as a "new" NIC in the registry. You might need to check the physical NICs of your host.

Thanks for your time.
Best regards,
Danny

Hi, thank you for replying. I don't want to do anything hardware related because this laptop has run into quite a number of problems recently. It's 9-10 years old so I think that might be the issue. Do think a repair install can help the case? Or is there any way that I can tinker in the registry to fix the NIC?
