Microsoft Exchange update - Setup cant use the domain controller

Hi,

We are trying to upgrade exchange (from CU8 to CU9, and now to newer), but it says: Setup cant use the domain controller 'default-first-site-name' because it belongs to active directory site ' ', setup must use domain controller in the same site as this computer (FQDN to our Domain Controller).

The only thing is that the domain controller is in DMZ, we were thinking that something on firewall is blocking some Exchange ports but that isnt the case.

We run the update this way:
\setup.exe /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms /Mode:upgrade /DomainController:(FQND of our DC)

parameters Staticdomaincontrollers and Staticglobalcatalogs is not set (it shows {} )

Can you help us?

Exchange server and DC are in the same site, i checked that with get-exchangeserver and get-domaincontroller from exchange management shell. Thank you

Up to 10 attachments (including images) can be used with a maximum of 3.0 MiB each and 30.0 MiB total.

ps. We can see the domain controller from file system correctly and when we try nslookup, the domain controller correctly resolves the DNS

Hi @LukasUrban-6146 ,

Have you prepared the AD and AD domains using the following cmdlet:

 E:\Setup.exe /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms /PrepareAD
 E:\Setup.exe /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms /PrepareAllDomains

Because there is a version update for AD and domain structure, so if you want to use PowerShell to upgrade, you'll have to run these above cmdlets ( also needs run /PrepareSchema if the RangeUpper changes like CU9 to CU10)

If these don't help, please also check this article: https://www.orbid365.be/install-exchange-2016-with-active-directory-sites/

Hi, it didnt work, same error. Should I run this from DC itself (the PrepareAD)?

Thank you

Hi @LukasUrban-6146 ,

Have you run /Prepare Schema?
If you want to upgrade from CU8 to CU10 or the latest SU, you should run this before PrepareAD.
