"hyper-v could not resolve replica server name".

Hello everyone,
after having done the hyper-v replication I want to do the extended replication but on a server far away which has a different network address, so I created another windows server and I configured it as a router after I I linked the two servers, the ping worked great between them but when I try to do a extended replication I get an error message "hyper-v could not resolve replica server name".
What do you think is the problem or the mistake I made?
thank you in advance.

Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum!

Based on your error message, your issue seems to be a common Hyper-V network issue. When we set up Hyper-V replica, primary server communicates with the replica server using the FQDN. The FQDN is resolved by querying the DNS Server. You should firstly check if you have a problem with the name you set for the server or if you used an IP Address or NetBIOS name instead of using an FQDN format. Changing the name or format will fix the issue. If you are using the correct format (FQDN), then its a DNS issue. If your replication is one way, then check if your primary server and replica server are configured with the correct DNS Servers. If your replication includes a reverse one, then you need to check your extended replica as well.

Besides, you can also go to Event Viewer>> Applications and Services Logs>> Microsoft>> Windows>> Hyper-V VMMS to check if there are any other error messages occuring.

Thanks for your support!

Joan

@jiayaozhu-MSFT hello thank you for your reply
I will clarify my situation better, in the main server my domain is test.local with an @ IP 192.168.1.14 so in my extended replica server which is called replica (which includes another network) I assigned the DNS suffix therefore the FQDN format is replica.test.local
but I did not prescribe the DNS address since it is not in the same network, did I have to specify it?

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback!

Based on your description, I still feel a little bit confused about your network settings:
1) Which machine is your DNS server and how you configured DNS on that machine, and on which machine you need to decode your DNS? In addition, which domain name you would like to decode. It sounds that your machines are in the same domain?

2) What do you mean different networks, does that refer to different subnets?

Thanks for your support!

Joan
