Explorer.exe keeps crashing for some reason and the desktop is gone and the background turns grey. Sometimes it happens when I right-click the cursor lags for a bit and eventually the crash happens.

Have you installed any software recently that might install Windows Explorer shell extensions? They can break Windows Explorer like you observed, and the solution is to uninstall them. You can later share the crash dumps with the developers, if they do want to fix those bugs.

To the OP did you find out the cause? I have the same issue wiht W11.

How about trying to run dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth or sfc /scannow?
We also could try to update Windows 10 , run a Disk check and proform clean boot.

Workaround:

Right-click a folder in the work area or create a folder in the work area and right-click

Solution:

For me the problem is the Fast Explorer extension shell present in the alldup 4.4.58 application
Disabled using ShellExView v2.01 application (Nir Sofer)
Problem solved
