Sharepoint365 & Data Storage Locations

Delving deeper into Sharepoint365 for specific collaborative uses I find myself going against years of network administrative experiences when creating sites, pages and calendars. Using the web sparingly for corporate data and applications is a point of tried and true wisdom. Anything online can and will be compromised, by strangers or by Microsoft in time.

I digress. Looking into and creating these sharepoint365 sites there is plenty of talk about data library creation, managing those folders, setting permissions, and even assigning meta data. Great. But where is that PRIVATE data being placed? And is there a way to remove Microsoft nose from my business by routing these SharePoint sites to local, traditional, storage locations? I prefer not to have our data, schedules, and day-to-day tasks in any remote data-center anywhere.

While I'd much rather run my own Exchange server I have to work with what was given, Office365. Even so, just because I'm in for a penny doesn't mean I need to be in for a pound, unless of course I'm being forced into it.

I have no intention of being part of the Borg, the collective, how can I use what tools are available in Office/sharepoint365 without having Microsoft involved beyond what is reasonable?

@ITDept-8848,

If you are using Microsoft 365 services, this is by design that customer data(Exchange Online email and attachments, Power BI reports, SharePoint Online site content, or instant messaging conversations) will be stored in Microsoft's global cloud locations.

By default, Microsoft engineers have no standing administrative privileges and no standing access to customer data in Microsoft 365.

In addition, Microsoft has robust policies, controls, and systems built into Microsoft 365 to help keep your information safe and Microsoft 365 still uses service-side technologies that encrypt customer data at rest and in transit.

Hello,

Yes, I came across and read that link prior to posting. If 365 provides only web storage of data, is there another version of Sharepoint that is relatively contemporary that I can run locally?

I do appreciate MS's efforts to secure data and prevent loss, however MS is not me or my company and cannot be fully trusted as I would those sink or swim with our business decisions. In this day, proper network management appears secondary to corporate agenda and the desire to profit from harvested analytics and cultivate subscription based revenue streams.

Jurassic Park "Just because we can (put everything online), doesn't mean we should." I need to find another, more controllable and internally regulated way.

@ITDept-8848,@AllanJAshinoff-5533,

If you want to run ShrePoint locally, we suggest you use SharePoint server 2019 since SharePoint Server is a locally-hosted platform that your company owns and operates.

More information about how to deploy SharePoint Server 2019 for your reference:

Thank you. I figured as much myself, but I've invested some time in learning a bit about Sharepoint365 so I thought it prudent to ask if things could be adjusted as I prefer them before I started to an alternative option.

The 2019 Sharepoint? Is it similar, only local?

I'm weighing whether I need to purchase Sharepoint2019 or not to maintain the degree of confidentiality we require. I'm also having trouble determining whether or not our 100 Office365 licenses would cover a Sharepoint 2019 or would i need to purchase new licenses.

You've given me much to consider and work through but I'm not quite at the point of deciding there yet. Thank you.

@AllanJAshinoff-5533,

Office 365 will not cover the SharePoint Server 2019 license, and a new license needs to be purchased.
