Windows 10 Update issues

Hi All,

I work for a Managed Services company and we've been having issues updating Windows 10 for one of our clients. The client is question has 30 Lab computers (all the same, HP Inc HP EliteBook Folio 9470m). Four or five of these were able to update past 1909 to the latest version, the rest cannot. We've done extensive troubleshooting in a attempt to get them updated, and we absolutely want to avoid wiping and reloading windows (mostly because of the number of computers and work that needs to be done to re-configured them for the client). In all attempts to upgrade, the upgrade seems to complete but fails at the point where it is restarting so the upgrade is downloaded and installs to 100%, but then simply pops up a message that the upgrade has failed:

Here is everything that we have tried:

  • Run updates via Windows settings, however they will not go past 1909 (it will either give us that error and says updates failed and to retry, or it does not find any further updates)

  • Attempted to run updates using Windows Update Assistant, same error as above

  • Cleared windows update download cache

  • Ran antivirus scans, all came clean

  • Downloaded the latest windows ISO, mounted it and installed the update on top, same error as above

  • Downloaded the ISO for each version and attempted to gradually update one version at a time, however the first update fails as well with the same error as above

  • Attempted to run the ISO from a USB, same errors (both latest version and gradually)

  • Removed any software that could prevent the installation

  • Disabled antiviruses

  • Ran sfc /scannow, DISM restore health and chkdsk

  • Made sure all drivers and firmware are up to date

  • Attempted to run updates from safe mode and clean boot, same error

  • Attempted to review update logs but we cannot determine what is causing the updates to fail. We attempted to use SetupDiag as well but the file it creates is empty

  • Attempted everything that we could find online regarding windows 10 updates failing (not all of the links are here):

We find it strange that a few laptops updated but not the others, which rules out them not being compatible. Update logs can be provided if necessary, I just do not have the computer here with me at this moment. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mickael Moco
