Data bar misplacement after database is updated

Hello,

I will try to describe my issue as well as possible (I'm a forum newbie). Since "well" is relative, I'm open for any constructive criticism. I tried my chance on visguy but no responses yet.

Visio Version:
- Visio 2016 MSO
- Language: German

What I'm trying to build:
I want to display data from an Excel sheet by using Visio. To do so, I have imported the data in Visio and have created stencils for different data sets. The stencils have been set up to contain the needed data and to display them by using advanced data graphics. Each advanced data graphic is used for one and only one master stencil.
After linking the data to the corresponding stencil manually (a certain master stencil for the corresponding data set), all the shapes and their respective data seem to be displayed in the correct way (see picture "BeforeUpdating.jpg").

The issue(s):
The values of the excel sheet are meant to change. After updating the data, most of it is displayed correctly... except for the data bars (see picture "AfterUpdating.jpg")
After digging the problem, I have observed the following facts:

  • The data value is correct, only the display is off

  • When a specific shape (with the wrongly displayed data) is deleted and newly linked with the master stencil, the data layout is displayed properly.

  • The data bar max. value changes after the update. This value is initially set to 1 for every data graphic.

  • The data bars on the left of the rectangle are set the same way as the ones on the right (in the AdvancedDataGraphics), but the ones on the right get put above one another after updating the data.

I must be doing something wrong, any hints on how to fix the issue?
Thank you in Advance!

@Lolo1313-9920,
According to your description, I ran a simple test on Visio 2016, but I did not encounter any issues, please check it out.

Since this issue occured randomly, the cause of the problem cannot be determined currently. I have the following information and want to confirm with you at your convenience.

  1. Is there a problem after only importing the Excel file? What is the extension of this file?

  2. When changed the values of Excel table, does the Visio file close? Please save and close all files, and restart your PC to have a check.

  3. Which template was used to create the Visio file? Please use other templates to check this issue.

Per my research, please try the following steps to check the problem.

  • Try to edit the data bar.

  • Create a new Visio file and create a simple data set to check if this problem exists.

If the above do not work, I also suggest you try to open the Visio in safe mode to check this issue.

Any updates, please let me know.

@vikiji

Hi,

Thank you VikiJi for all the propositions. here are the answers to your questions:

  1. Yes, the misplacement of the data bars happens only after the values have been updated in Visio. File extension is .xlsm (I use a small macro for 2 buttons) Is this extension an issue?

  2. I've updated the values, saved and closed the visio file. Then restarted my PC. After that I opened the visio file again. The misplacement was still visible.

  3. I didn’t use any template. I started in an empty "page" and create my stencils by inserting forms (rectangle, triangle,...). Should I use a specific template?

• I have edited the data bar and manually set the maximum value back to 1. Every time I update the data, the max. value automatically changes it again to 100... Is there a way to lock this value?
• Before starting this projects, I did some tests with smaller data sets. The update worked well and the data bars stayed at the right place with the right max. value.

I might try to start my visio from scratch again... what do you think?

Thanks a lot for your support.

@Lolo1313-9920,
Thanks for your reply and sharing.

In view of the fact that the data for this issue comes from a .xlsm file containing macros, and other simple data sets do not have this issue.
I had a test with a simple macro, but also did not encounter this issue.

I suggest you back up all files first, then disable all macros in the .xlsm file and save it as .xlsx to check this issue.
If do not work, please try to open the Visio app in safe mode, then open your Visio file for a check.
If this issue persists, you may need to start your visio from scratch again.

Any updates, please let me know.
