Error 80072efe and 80072ee2 in SMSTS.LOG. Client fails to receive task sequence policy using integrated NIC

We're running ConfigMgr Current Branch version 2006 with hotfix rollup KB4575789. I have some new computer models that I am trying to build using our task sequence. These new models all have the Intel 1219 Ethernet NIC. If I plug my RJ45 cable into the devices (using the onboard NIC) and boot from our media, I get an IP address and I can ping my MP and DP.

I have updated my boot media to include the latest driver for the Intel 1219 Ethernet NIC.

When I start the task sequence wizard my PC fails to get policy for any task sequences after about 1/2 hour. Here are the relevant parts from the SMSTS.LOG:

If I google the 80072efe error code it translates to "The connection with the server was terminated abnormally". I cannot find a good explanation for error code 80072ee2.

If I plug-in a different (USB) NIC to the same device and use the same RJ45 cable with the same boot media, my device quickly gets policy and I can run the task sequence successfully. This makes me think that I can rule-out certificates, media, and the network cable/ports. To me it really seems like a driver issue but I have tried 3 different versions of the driver, including the latest one. I have also applied all firmware updates to my laptops.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Sounds like a WinPE driver issue. Which model is it? A quick lookup brings up the following article for Dell.intel-ethernet-i219-network-interface-controller-installation-with-sccm

Thank you!

I got it fixed in the end - the machine in title was a Lenovo T14 Gen 2 and Lenovo in their wisdom included a totally dodgy driver in their 1909 pack.

Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM and the driver from the 1909 pack with version 12.18.9.23 is completely unusable with all sorts of random errors/timeouts etc.

I must have spent about 8 hours trying to troubleshoot this but the fix is to use the driver from Windows 10 2004 pack with version 12.19.1.37 in both WinPE as well as FullOS.

When you get the error can you press F8 to enable command prompt, do an ipconfig /all, try to ping DP/MP?
Being able to initiate a task sequence from TS wizard verifies that SCCM has identified the endpoint as a member of a collection to which 1 or more task sequences are deployed.
Did you review CAS.log?
How are your boundary groups and IP subnets configured?
What are the TS deployment settings?

Hi and thank you for responding.

Everything checked out just fine, I could ping DP/MP, the outside world just fine.

The Task Sequence was deployed to all systems as well as all unknown computers where my machine was.

Noting in the CAS.log of concern.

The boundary groups and subnets are/were totally fine wince everything else was working expected.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I seem to have something super similar with Lenovo T14 Gen 2 machines and Intel I219-LM NICs although I don't have a USB NIC to prove the point that it works via USB..

PXE works as expected, you then get a slight delay before getting the task sequence wizard and resolving the task sequence dependencies takes forever eventually timing out with:

Thanks for your reply. I'm trying to upload/attach the smsts.log, we'll see if it works.

I had thought about firewall ports, but if those were blocked wouldn't my task sequence fail using the USB NIC? Or is there something that might be specific to my integrated NIC?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.

The error code 80072ee2 means that "The operation timed out".

For the issue that we faced, we did a lot of research, but this problem is very rare, and the search results for reference are also very limited.
Could you upload the complete SMSTS.log after masking the sensitive information? Maybe some other useful information can be found.

Here is an article which has similar issue with yours, we could use this as a reference:
https://configuration355.rssing.com/chan-5121677/all_p14.html
Note: These are not from MS, just for your reference.

And just checking, did all the ports required are open on the firewall?
For more details about the ports, please check:
