Rehosting (Lift and shaift )Sharepoint 2016 on Premise Environmnet to Azure

we have an existing SharePoint 2016 on-premise environment having HA as backend SQL server 2016 always on failover cluster. two web servers, two application servers, and 1 office web app server. All servers are virtuals.

The requirement is to rehost the complete environment in azure. I mean they want to complete lift and shift the environment from on-premise to Azure.

The first question is possible? if yes what is recommended way to do that

The plan is to use a standard azure migration tool to copying the VMs.

I want to understand, is there are any guidelines to do the same. Need to know if there will be any impact on SharePoint Farm.

Hi @nadeemalam ,

As this post mentioned:

  • Set up you Azure( create the resource group, VHD, Servers etc)

  • Install the SharePoint in azure

  • Configure your IP

  • Move the database to Azure

  • Attach to the SharePoint.

  • test it

Please refer to these posts for more information about migrating Web Application from On-premises to Azure:

Move SharePoint On-Premise to Azure

Per my understanding normally the migration will not affect the original farm. Here is a blog you could a look:

Hi Elsie,

Thank you so much for your reply. Let me go through all details. we are planning UAT migration in August end.

Just want to check if all server moved as it is and only IP changes happened to the servers. will that work? Is that option is supported?

Hi @Elsie Lu_MSFT,

II have gone through the provided link by you. still, I can not find the answer.

In the above answer, you have recommended the below steps.
Set up your Azure( create the resource group, VHD, Servers, etc)

Install the SharePoint in azure

Configure your IP

Move the database to Azure

Attach to the SharePoint.

test it.

This is ok. it requires a lot of time as we have a number of third-party components, Nintex, Metalalogix, Valeo for design, etc around 3TB database. looking for some quick approach. As I mentioned in my question, is possible to lift and shift the same environment directly into azure.. whether it is possible or not. A dependent component like AD, DNS, exchange, etc. will be there already in azure..

IIn the case of any constraint because of an always-on cluster, if lift and shift are not possible for the database, what other alternative without creating a new farm in azure.

Is it feasible to use Managed SQL services and sync complete databases and move the web and app and other servers as it is. will SharePoint farm will become up as working. is this approach will work. does it require any manual setting to perform?.

Please advise.
Thanks in advance.
