Network drive not reconnecting yet files accessible via mapped drive

My backups to a NAS drive haven't worked for a couple of weeks (after several year's of working successfully) and it looks like a network problem. Here's the gist:

I am able to view files contained on my NAS drive by using a Mapped drive in File Explorer - yet it doesn't appear as a valid device in the Network section of File Explorer.

If I look at the device status in the Device Manager it sometimes says it's "working properly" and sometimes says "device not connected". I've no idea what causes it to change back and forth.

Interestingly, I can still access files on the drive via File Explorer even when The Device Manager says that it's not connected.

Another odd thing is that I am able to temporarily force the device to reconnect fully by entering its IP address into a browser (at which time my backup software sees it) but within a minute or so, it's gone again.

Can anyone help me?

Hello @RanaldMilne-1952,

One approach to this type of problem is to use features of the operating system (in this case, Event Tracing for Windows (ETW)) to observe what is happening at a low-level when problems occur. The "low-level" nature of the trace data (intricate details of how features function) has, at least, the following two issues:

  1. End users cannot interpret or understand the data themselves.

  2. End users cannot judge the security/privacy issues of sharing the trace data with others who claim to be able to interpret the data.

If, after waiting for other suggestions, sharing trace data seems like an acceptable "last chance" risk then let the forum know. This type of troubleshooting often involves several rounds of tracing and analysis; sometimes collaboration via the forum is a success but often it peters out before a conclusion is reached.

The Microsoft affiliated contributors to this forum normally advise against sharing this type of data.

Gary
