Setup Self Service for Super Users to do own PowerBI Reporting

Good day,

I would like some ideas on best way to implement a Self Service Environment,
I want to open the platform for self service, users has Powerbi desktop installed.

My Thoughts are: On SQL DW Server, create separate DW DB that does not affect data processing that is refreshed in the mornings to populate the Bus Units DB

I would like to split the db into Bus units "finance", i can create a DB named "LactalisDWSS" SS = SelfService
but i would like to create sub db within LactalisDWSS per business units to control permissions and table security

LactalisDWSS > Finance / Logistics / Sales

  1. Thoughts & ideas please on the self service platform > is this good or better ideas?

  2. How do i create subfolders within a DB as i dont want to create a DB per Bus Unit?

Please Any help

regards

Hi,

Not really a PowerBI Question, PowerBi is only the visualizer at the end to connect but I'm looking more for what is best practice on setting up self service platform connecting to the DW.

I want to setup a Self Service db that is populated daily but also split into multiple bus units, i don't want to create multiple DB so that depts don't see other dept tables etc.

  1. I don't want to affect dw daily processing hence the separate db that is populated and managed, but i cant seem to create sub folders in a DB?

  2. Is there a better setup i should be considering?

  3. if i use schema based "dept" for views it affects other DW runtimes

Any ideas / Thoughts please?

Hi @IsmailCassiem-3967

I want to confirm with you, is it Azure SQL Data Warehouse?
If YES, i will add the tag of Azure.

Hi @IsmailCassiem-3967

On SQL DW Server, create separate DW DB that does not affect data processing that is refreshed in the mornings to populate the Bus Units DB

This should be Azure SQL Data Warehouse.
So, what i mean is that do you want to be in Azure environment?

Off topic, s there a later version than SQL19 being released soon?

After the latest SQL Server2019 is released, there is the latest cumulative update (CU12).

Thank You for both questions,

unfortunately Azure is not an option, I can only implement Self Service within SQL14/19

Any ideas on how best options to setup/implement?

Also, is there a way to create folders within a DB
I don't want to create a DB per Business Unit Dept

perhaps another option, thought of dept schema in views but these still access live data processing as i wanted theses tables to have no effect on live processing

Hi,

Current Environment

DW Server using SQL14(migrating soon) with 3 DB (DW, Staging, Archive) with SSDT 2015 Development
SSAS / SSAS Tabular
SSIS
Powerbi gateway

Moving to SQL 3 Tier Platform, On Columnar Near Realtime DW
Tier1 Data Processing SQL DW, SSDT, SSIS
Tier2: Presentation OLAP / OLAP Tabular
Tier3: PowerBI / Qlik

a few supers users in different departments has Powerbi desktop installed, they need to connect to data
thought of exporting to text files on the network but 2 users already has direct access to dw which affect data processing locks using views etc

so im thinking to create a DB for my team to dump & update tables but the data is also unique and secured per dept hence i would have liked to create folders with in Static DB & NOT views that has link to Live DW. But i think i can only lock within static db by giving access to dept schema

Please Help, with ideas. i want to leave my footprint on moving the company forward but i want to do big and good
Thank you

Hi @IsmailCassiem-3967,

This seems to be a problem with sql-server-general. According to your environment, I have added a suitable tag for you.

Best regards,
Seeya
