Exchange Online Archive Retention Policy

Hi We have set retention policy for Exchange Online Mailboxes. Mailboxes which have Archive enabled doesn't get the policies/tages to set when trying from Outlook-right click-properties On Archive mailbox. When trying from primary mailboxes, it is appearing but no custom policies showing when right clicking - properties - policies on Exchange Online Archive. How to set up policies for Archive where users can choose to set up by themselves.
Also what is the difference between archive enabled at On premise Exchange (Hybrid environment) end or Exchange Online end (From compliance center)? Previously we could not enable archiving from Exchange Online end and had to enable it from On prem end when it is a synced account. Now we can enable from Compliance center.

@GoodResource

You can only apply retention policy on primary mailboxes, you cannot apply a retention policy on archive mailbox by default.

About Exchange online Archive and Exchange on-premises Archive, it just decided where your archive mailbox hosted.

About enabling Archive function, if your mailbox AD account is hosted on local AD, you need to enable it from Exchange on-premises. Indeed, for a synced mailbox, most of its functions need to be managed from Exchange on-premises.

Okay is there anyway we can achieve below:

We have 3 years deletion retention policy for primary cloud mailbox. Any emails older than 3 years will be deleted. But we are now enabling archiving, where local PSTs will be ingested for the user. We don't want same retention policy to get applied to Online Archive. We want user to choose one of the retention policy to choose by themselves, like delete over 5 years, 10 years etc etc. How we can achieve the same where primary mailbox will have one retention policy but the online archive will have different?

The retention policy/tags only works on primary mailbox.
If you want to apply custom tag on a mailbox, you just need to create personal retention tag, then add this retention tag to a retention policy and apply to mailbox. If your primary mailbox hosted on Exchange online, you need to configure retention policy from Exchange online, vice versa. For Exchange online, you may need to wait for a longer period of time for the policy to be applied to the mailbox.
