Retirement Announcement - Upgrade to Text-to-Speech Neural Voice on 31 August 2024

Text-to-Speech currently supports both standard and neural voices. However, since the neural voices provide more natural sounding speech output, and thus, a better end-user experience, we are retiring the standard voices on 31st August 2024 and they will no longer be supported after that date.

If you have a question, please post it in this thread.

To make the change, follow the steps to update the voice name in your speech synthesis request to the supported neural voice names in chosen languages by 31 August 2024. Starting 1st September 2024, standard voices will no longer be supported, please use neural voices for your speech synthesis request, on cloud or on prem. Follow the steps in this link.

If you have any additional queries regarding this retirement, please use comments on this thread to ask your specific queries and we will try our best to answer those queries. Thank you

Why does the text-to-speech API return "Starting September 1st, 2021 standard voices will no longer be supported" already today?? I thought we have until 2024 to do the migration..

@MatthewLEE-9875 It should be 1st September 2024, could you please let us know where this message was seen? Is it in the speech studio?

The entire message is "Starting September 1st, 2021 standard voices will no longer be supported. Please use neural voices... error code: 1007" which is in the errorDetail returned by the Speech SDK for JavaScript. We've been using the Speech SDK in a production application for a few months...

Matthew, the service team is rolling out the fix for this issue and please try out again. During the retiring period (31st August 2021- 31st August 2024), existing users can continue to use their standard voices, all new users/new speech resources should move to the neural voices.
